im really really lost for answers now......

ok I will atack this one, first off when it dies can you still hear the fuel pump running, also have you cleaned/replaced the ground points up and behind the fuse box. also clean the ground on the ign module infront of the drivers wheel well, also the clean the connections on the coil itself. also when the engine dies does the tach just drop or does they tach slowly fall
|
when its failed have NOT noticed fuel pump running.....all points etc cleaned up and checked, and yes the tach just drops straight to 0....Bang car is off and im rolling ....
anyone got any other suggestions etc.... i cant drive her as its unsafe as i am traveling over 120 Kms a day and on freeways etc....:'( i miss her so much
PS LOL u guys prob wouldnt even remeber this post hahah
but if u can just give it a quick read over
Cheers again guys, appreciate it

It could be a fuse/relay board problem. Remove it and inspect the pins and connectors. If any look burnt or discolored, note the connector letter and pin number - then we can see if the pin/s have anything to do with fuel delivery or ignition. -And you could try to scrape-clean any burnt pins or better - replace the fuse/relay board and connectors.
Before removing the connectors, label them on the bottom "A"-"F" ("A" is behind relay #1 and fuse #1 at the left side (right side if you're upside-down) ). _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

thanx smoothie,
ill get my auto elec to chck it out tomorrow as im taking it over there in the morn.
I think the fuel relay had been replaceda bout 6 months ago and was helping the car run alot better. it stopped backlashing, and had a lil better acceleration in the lower rpms. But it could have gone faulty so will get all checked out.
thanks for the quick reply
cheers,

Check the ignition switch. Had similar symptoms on my 79. The ignition switch was worn out. Stopping, starting, turning, etc - the weight of the keys on the keychain was just enough to allow the ignition switch to break contact without actually turning the key.

Could be a ground or ignition switch. I had an ignition switch fail but it just killed the radio connection.
My 1982 did the same thing until one day it just would no longer recover.
Started like yours... once in a while it would die... no real pattern to the reason it shut down... but it would all of a sudden.
Anyway first attempt was replace the fuel pump relay. Seemed to cure it for a month.
Then died again and would not restart no matter how long it sat.
So my mechanic (at the time I did not do my own work) suggested just raplacing all the units it could be. That being... new relay, coil and black box. I will not attempt the name again since the last time I posted this same thing I was bashed for calling it some thing incorrect. Anyway it is the unit in the nose behind the lights.
I replaced those units and the car has been perfect for about 13 years now.
So.... your call.
Sounds like the same issue to me.

the aluminum box in the engine compartment between the drivers side headlight and wheel is the ICM Ignition Control Module,
if you havent done so already replace the ign switch cheap and easy and should be done anyway. however if your dashlights remain on when the car dies not likely to be the problem and if it is then the car would just stutter for a moment regain power and jump right back up if left in gear,
if you are saying that you cannot hear the fuel pump running at all when the car dies try this, run a wire right from the battery to the cabin and put a switch on it, then look at the mess of wires behind the fuse box and look for a fairly large black/green wire and it will have a male femal connection with a plastic sleeve, pull it apart and 1 side will be to the relay/fusebox, the other side will be to the pump itself (touch the wire from the battery to either side and listen for the pump to come on) when you figure out which wire it is that goes to the fuel pump attach to the other side of the switch, now with only a switch between the battery and the fuel pump you should always hear the fuel pump on with the switch on, if the car doesnt die with this setup you know that it is the wiring for the fuel pump relay, (bad ground?), you may consider installing an inline fuse between the switch and fuel pump.
if the car still dies with that setup I would recommend that your start looking at your ign system, now keep in mind that this system is pretty old along with the wiring, what I would recommend is that you purchase a MSD 6A or 6AL ign module, along with a blaster2 ign coil (red) and install this into the system, now for the switched wire which turns the MSD 6A/AL on run this to the switch you have installed for the fuel pump (leave the fuel pump on the same wire) and then you will have BOTH your fuel and spark run off a CONSTANT + with just 1 switch controlling them, that means that the ONLY thing your key will be for is for unlocking the steering column and also to start the car. I the car still dies once you have done this then I would have to say that your fuel pump probably need replacing, and to check the return fuel line to the tank and make sure it isnt clogged as if it is then your fuel system will build up too much pressure and the fuel pump with turn itself off, however I doubt that you will get this far. _________________ 3 928s, |
