Hello everyone, sorry to write one of these questions again, but my problem seems to be a little different then other peoples.
Its winter in Sydney atm, and after living in Brisbane for a few years the car would start fine (it was also garages) but now it lives outside and in the cold. I am getting Ice on the inside of my windows, if that helps...anyway 2 the problem..
My car doesnt like to start, today it took me 15min of on and off cranking to get the thing to start, theres spark, but Im thinking that there is a fuel supply problem, as when I used to have problems i would just push down on the accelerator pedal, but now If i touch it it wont start. Eventually though it does start but I cannot touch the pedal (even lightly) at all for a few minutes, because if I do it stalls.
This morning when it started when it was idling very very low, I managed to put my foot all the way down to the floor, and there was no response until there was a loud "CLank" (sounded like a metal plate slamming shut or something) and then it started to idle reasonably ok.
When it does start, it jumps around so much that alot of my neighbours think it has a big block in it.....and I have to say no...its just idling at 200rpm, (yup 200). When it warms up it definatly sounds like a v8, because I have had so many people asking me about it lately...so maybe thats part of the problem, and when it is warm it idles from 650rpm to 950rpm.
I know the wiring on the CSV isnt the best, but Im pretty sure that it is connected up correctly. I havent had time to get the multimeter out yet, although I will have a little look during lunch and see if everything seems ok.
This is all very weird as I had none of these problems, until I left my car to sit for 2 days, I went on a holiday.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. _________________ ------------------------------

Check for corrosion/burning of the fuel pump fuse. This could affect the pump, auxillary air valve and the WUR.

Sounds like a water condensation problem. Could be water in the fuel or moisture in the dizzy.... Unfortunately there are lots of possibilities.
Could be the control plate sticking? Anything water condenses on and freezes that is supposed to move won't. If you ahd to crank it a long time without starting and it didn't belch black smoke it is probably not getting fuel. A bottle of fuel drier (alcohol) might work .. takes a few days for it to work through though. Pull the dipstick and smell for fuel in the oil. Low compression or sticky rings will cause cold start problems. If you smell fuel do a cold dry compression check then a wet check. If the plugs have not been changed recently try some new ones.
Thats just some of the easy to eliminate stuff. Electrical gremlins is a whole nuther ballgame.

Does your car have the auxiliary air valve (AAV)? If so, it might be stuck closed during cold start (when it should be open). The AAV lets extra air into the engine during cold start, if it is faulty the idle for the first few minutes will be rough and low. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
