I'm new to this board, and actualy I don't own a 924 yet. I want to build a high fuel milage commuter car for my wife by swapping a Quantum TD engine (I've already got the donormoblie) into a 924. I'd like to have a 5sp tranny as well.
What I'd like to know is, if I find an older 924 with a four speed, could the tranny be changed out for the 5sp from the Quantum? That car is, as you may know, just a re-badged Audi 4000, and I know that most 924's (except for Getrag snailshell 5sp's) used Audi internals. Is the gearcase the same on the outside? Will the frame mounts fit? How about the tranny input shaft and the torque tube?
My shop is well equipped with welders, plasma torch, lathe, etc, but I don't want to have go to heroic extremes to try make it fit either.
Anybody here know for sure?

I would recommend that you pull the 4 speed if you dont want it, and with the torque that a diesel puts out I recommend you either change out to a 944 5 speed or even better a 951 5 speed, the reason I say 951 is taller gears and this will allow you to keep the RPMs down, to install either a 944/95 tranny you will need the tranny (DUH) and the torque tube and shifter linkage, also you will need a ford mustang clutch disc 79-82 2.3L german 4 speed the disc has an overall diameter of 8.5" and the center spline has a 1" shaft hole with 23 spline count which mates perfectly into the stock 924 flywheel/pressure plate, although you plan on using a different engine the flywheel may be the same, or if you find out your overall diameter of the factory audi disc you might find a ford disc with those spline measurements to fit,

I dont think that anyone here on the board however will know if an audi tranny will fit directly or how much work will be involved, best to get the car and look for yourself

A few things to look out for on the audi trans. Since the audi trans bolts to the engine it should have a spot for a piolit bearing on the input shaft the 924 doesn't. It may have a diffrent size input shaft or a diffrent length the splines stick out.

One other thing you might look out for is final gearing. My 79 with the snailshell 5spd turns almost 3200 rpm at 65 mph. A tad high for your wants I beleive.

this is the VERY reason I recommend the 951 tranny, it has the tallest gearing out of all the units

I think most diesels have around a 3500 rpm redline, you need a diesel trans thats geared for it , anything else and you'll blow your engine or you'll have to watch the rpms constantly to avoid it . by another car (like the donor) and make 1 good car .

"She won't take no more turns, Sir!" (Steve McQueen --"The Sand Pebbles")

Volks 1.6 TD's red line at 4500, though some autocrossers spin them up to 6 grand, and live to tell about it--
