hey everyone im totally new to the 924 porsche thing and completely new to working on cars, except for like tune-up stuff. I got a 77 924 and already (after cruising this bored for a few days) want to do a million things. Most importantly though, I need to get the car mechanically sound for my 1500 mile trip to Florida in Late August but have no idea on what needs to be replaced on the car i recently aquuired (ok a little idea but not much). I just would hate to be stuck in like SOuth Carolina standing around with my thumb in my butt wondering what the heck i should do. _________________ looking for a great one...... |

Indeedy that would suck! OK, so it's tune-up time.
#1 item for me, belts and hoses, not to mention fuel filter (in addition to the expected oil and air filters).
You may also wish to RTFAQ:

Given the distance, you'll probably also want to review the status of your tires (including the SPARE!!!) and brakes. Make sure there's no dry-rot on the tires, as well as adequate tread to deal with the torrential downpours in FL. Speaking of which Rain-X your windsheild and make sure your wipers are happy! New blades. Check your brake hoses for cracks, and flush the system with new brake fluid if you haven't already since buying the car. Obviously make sure your pads are decent and rear shoes adjusted.
The primary undercurrent in this thread is to check and replace all rubber components that you don't want to be without in WV on the side of 94! BTDT, but not in a P-car, and it wasn't too much fun.
Wouldn't hurt to publish your route, collect names and phone #'s of people on the way, JIC.

wash the car, do the windows, and armour all the tires - that way you'll look good in your 924 running or not!

once you hit Northern Virginia - consider US Route 17 South - its a very nice drive and although it will take you longer you will have plenty more accessible stopping points in case of emergency. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)

US Rt 17 starts in Winchester, VA and ends in Punta Gorda, FL covering 1,189 miles. You can hit it just south of DC near Culpepper, VA (as it crosses west to east over I-95. I traveled it many times from that point to Norfolk in my college days. I've taken it south as far as South Carolina but not sure what lies beyond that.
Look it up on a coastal map, it might be worth considering for at least part of the trip - I-95 is the super highway that more or less replaced it.
Enjoy! _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)

I look into it but as the magic * ball says "outcome looks doubtful" | lol - i hear ya, but like I mentioned maybe see if you can work a portion in - south of Virginia Beach is very scenic, anything north of that is commercialized. In any respect, have fun, drive safely and dream of large women!
hehe - that last bit is a quote from one of my favorite movies - anyone know which one?
