|
|
Hey Guys!
I was wondering if i can install Electric mirrors from a 944 on my 1977 924, and make them function as they should! Is it a hassle? I think its better than stretching my arm all the way to the passenger mirror to adjust it!
Thanks in advance!! _________________ 1977 Porsche 924

I would expect it to be a bit of a hassle, since the wiring would not be there. Why do your mirrors keep changing? _________________ Vaughan Scott

pain in the arse to do that..but .. youd need to cut holes in the doors for the wiring and install the mounting frame for the mirrors(or replace the doors with power mirror cabable ones). Then run the wiring(control and defrost, both sides) through the doors and under the dash and console, install a switch control, ect... id just opt for a set of manual lightweight racing mirrors and be done with it...save yourself about 10 lbs of weight, several hours of work, and alot of headaches.. _________________ Eric

Having been there, I'll tell you first hand it is a hassle. Not technically difficult, but time consuming. Before seriously embarking on the project, I would recommend getting the backing plates and wiring harness before anything else - the mirrors will be relatively easy to come by in comparison. There are harnesses for drivers side only mirrors, and a harness for dual mirrors. Once you have all the pieces in-hand (harness, both mirrors, cross-over switch, backing plates), then you can go at it. Installing the backing plate(s) was the most difficult part.

It could be done fairly easily, as long as you are comfortable working with electric circuit diagrams so you can see where to plug the wires in.
Porsche even offered kits at on time so the right hand power mirror could be added to cars that only had the left hand power mirror. I would suggest going to some "Pick A Part" self service salvage yards and finding a car with the mirrors intact that you could remove the entire setup from. Take paper and pen, so you can make a drawing of the setup.
The wiring harnesses for the electric mirrors are separate pieces that are plugged into the main harness, so there would not be any cutting or splicing necessary.
On cars with electric mirrors, there is a reinforcing plate on the inside of the door. I think the later cars already have the plate attached on the bottom of the passenger door. On your early car, you will probably need to install the plates on both doors (you could pop rivet them on if necessary (the mounting bolts for the mirror base would hold the reinforcing plates on once they were installed). You would need to drill the three mounting holes in each door (I don't remember if the existing two holes from the manual mirrors line up with the holes used by the electric mirrors).
If you want to try to "piece" the eectric mirror setup together from multiple sources, the mirrors are not nearly as expensive, or hard to find at swapmeets as they used to be. At the Pomona Swapmeet, they usually go for around $25 each in whichever color you might want. The wiring on the mirrors at the swapmeet is almost always chopped off (I guess it it too much work for those guys to disassemble the doors to remove the wiring). I may have the wiring harnesses in the garage (or parts of them, you may have to do some repair work) if you go this way and need the wiring. |
