The Background:
A few weeks ago i bought a '78 924. It had been sitting in a friends garage for 5 years and he was ready to get rid of it. So he sold it to me from 300.00. He said it ran when he parked it. So i took it home changed the oil and filter put a new battery in it and it started up.

The Breakdown:
The body it in good shape, only one small (4 inch, not very deep) dent in the rear left side. The paint is charcoal, its not the stock job, it isent chipped anywhere, but it does have some wierd spottes on it. The glass is all good, no cracks or chips. The interior is ok, the seats are ripped at the seams and the dach is cracked. I dont know much about the engine, it has been sitting for 5 years so it definatly needs a tune up, but i dont know what else. To start it you have to turn it over a few times but after that it idles fine. The tranny seems to be in good shape, it is a 4 speed and the shifter isent relatively tight. The wheels are old perellies, not much tread left at all, the rims are the basic 8 spokes.

The Question:
How much can I get out of it? I dont want to sink alot of time and money into fixing it up, so what is a good price to sell it at in this shape? And what is the best way of selling it ?

Thanks guys

David,
Where in the world are you? Does the car have a relevant test certificate?

Any service records? I would dump the gas and clean the tank. 5 years is a long time. You can't beat the price but I would put some money into the car now. Have it checked over and replace what's needed. Shouldn't cost much, these cars are pretty good for part prices.

If you get it running in good shape its probably worth $1500. However you didn't mention the millage. Put an add in the local paper and in the for sale section of the BBS.

now, in it's running state, maybe 500. I would invest the $100-$200 in tune up parts, get it running really nice, and sell it for $1500 or so.

924 n/a's (non turbos) are funny price wise.. in excellant condition its hard to get more than 2k for one, yet a beater will sell for $800 fairly easy because it says Porsche on the back one day, and another you cant get $200 for it, it half timing, half luck (or lack of it)..... given your description, id give it a low of $700 and a high of $1000 ... "running" is a big plus.. but it all boils down to what the people you get to come look at it are willing to pay..

As a side note, this car will probably need a minimum of $1000 worth of work. A complete going over, tires, filters, brake pads, bearings, rubber bits, ect... and thats someone with a bit of mechanical inclination. a "924" person could probably spend half that assuming theyve got a stash of spares (we all do , dont we ) ..and i dont even want to think about what a porsche shop would charge...

Regarding test certificates, in the UK vehicles have to have a periodic Ministry of Transportation (MOT) inspection. In the US, the requirements vary from state to state. Here in Kansas, there are never any mechanical or emissions tests required, but some states (especially those with dense populations and smog) require you to display a sticker on the windshield showing that you have passed annual inspection. Typically in the US vehicles over a certain age (often 25 years) are exempt.
