On the drivers side of the engine there is a window in the bell housing and a timing mark sticking out of the edge of the window that you can line up with the 0 mark. pop the distributor cap off and just the the right of the tach pick up lines there is a line inscribed on there for the rotor to line up to. Just out of curiousity(sp) you did use the dot on the back of the cam gear right and not the one of the front, right?

If you are referring to the upper fly wheel as the cam gear yes i did line up the dot on the fly wheel with the cam cover. Thanks for your help

Make sure the cam gear and flywheel are aligned like the photos below. The distributor rotor should be pointing at #1, roughly toward the driver's seat in a LHD car. Once you have everything aligned and tightened, double check by turning the crankshaft two full revolutions by hand (24mm socket on the front crankshaft pulley)
..

Also, make sure that the "dot" or "square" on the cam pulley is in the valley of two gear teeth. There is a similar mark on a tooth which is not the correct one to use.

Nice pictures-
That is the best shot of a timing mark yet.

Make a mark on the dizzy with the cap off Where #1 cyl plug wire is &
also on the dizzy clamp on the base I have 2 marks for
advance and retard also
mark crank pully with hack saw or dremel tool then add bright
colored paint over it this all will be a benefit in the end. If you
have to do any other work god-forbid.

The manuals will tell you how and where to set it Joe. Someone on Board should be able to say whether or not to disconnect the vacuum advance/retard lines from your distributor, and which timing mark to use at what RPM. The 931 is different than the 924, so I don't know the procedures and values for your engine off the top of my head.

Unless the pump you swapped in is way below spec, it won't affect the overall system pressure, thus you shouldn't have had to make any changes. The system pressure is controlled by a valve on the side of the fuel distributor, and changing accumulators, filters and/or pumps isn't going to matter, as long as the pump is putting out the minimum system pressure.

I'm inclined to think you've got a vacuum leak, and by tweaking the mixture, all you have done is masked the symptoms and not really fixed the problem. ...just my $0.02

You can't set the timing on the 924 NA unless the engine is running and the vacuum advance is disconnected.

Start the car then set the timing with a strobe gun and the vacuum advance disconnected. Then rev the engine with the strobe gun connected and the vacuum advance still disconnected and make sure its advancing via the mechanical advance. Finally apply a vacuum to the distributor advance and check that that it is working. Last step is reconnect the vacuum advance hose and tighten the distributor clamp nut.

I checked all vacuum lines and also sprayed water onto and around the injectors and intake manifold thinking ited sputter if there was a leak there
was a slight leak around a couple of injectors cause the holders were loose in the head no Ive never set the timing correctly with the advance line
disconnected is all.

On my '84 924NA I have had some problems setting the timing correctly. the car is running good at the moment, but I had to use the marking within the distributor to set the advance timing. I can not use a stroboscope light to fine tune the advance, because I do not see the marking on the flywheel. There is however a marking, but not at the right spot.

Is it possible to put the flywheel on incorrectly?

The book says to set advance with a machine and at 4500 rpm

I also know there a post some where that answers this " I know theres
a spot thats best I cant rememeber if its a few degrees advanced."
guess its pretty easy to give to much advance.
