How much power will the standard 4-speed transmission handle?
I am planning a turboconversion, do i need a 944 tranny?

I am thinking of keeping the standard compression (euro spec), and run ap.8 psi? Any done this?

By the way, I got my new rims today. 17" with 235/40 an 215/45. I like them, I like them a lot.. I'll post some pictures soon.

I'm no expert on these transmissions but I am sure others will chime in if I'm wrong. The snailshell 4 speed should be more than strong enough for what you are talking. From what I understand Porsche kept the snailshell trans when it introduced the turbo in 1980 even though it had switched to other design for the NA motor. Some people have bolted up V8's to these things with little problem. As far as bolting a turbo to a NA motor with stock compression I would say it could be done but you will probably have to switch to diferent fuel delivery system at the very least such as a progamable EFI. Better spark managment would be a definate plus along with an intercooler too.

end wrench there was NO 4 speed snailshell, the snailshell was only 79 NA and first year 931 for US, I think ROW used them too,

as per the 4 speed handling the power, use it if it breaks then replace with a 944 unit

{according to PET}
The snailshell appeared in '78 in it's "Z" designation, and was used in ROW NA cars in '78 and 79'. The US version NA used a snailshell only in '79, the 016.Y. All the turbo cars were outfitted with the G31 snailshell in '79-'80, and the European market cars continued to use it throughout the production span (-84). US and Japanese market turbos used the audi-based gearbox in '81 & '82.

This chart breaks things down by year and transmission type.

Regarding tranny strength- I haven't heard of any major problems with our's (other than syncros- including the Audi units). There have been a lot of instances where 944 owners have destroyed the ring&pinion, even with stock motors. Hard to say if it's from dumping the clutch and roasting the tires, or from repeated hits from the engine torque.
