|
|
OK guys, I finally got to test drive the 931 with the new clutch today, even though my insurance does not go back into effect until the first of the month. So, I couldn't hot rod it too much, as I just kept it in the naborhood. Bottomline is, the clutch works great. I thought the clutch might engage a little harder, because the Ford disk has double springs, as opposed to single springs of the Sachs disk. But the new clutch actually engages noticeably smoother than the old disk. I like it better. I would highly recommend this $29.00 US disk as opposed to the $250.00 factory disk.
One tip, I tried the disk on the propeller shaft before I installed it, and it was a tight fit. So, I used a half round file to take a little off of the top of the splines on the disk, and followed that up with a small trianglar file in the spline grooves, until it slipped on as easily as the old disk. I lubed both the disk splines, and the propeller shaft splines with a light coat of high temp moly grease, and it went together very easily. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

I'm sold! Me and my friend's 931s both need new clutches soon. Where do you buy the Ford disc from?
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't be sold to quickly.
It may not hold up as long.
And I'd be in no hurry to pull the car apart again in a few months to save a few bucks.
*note: I know little about clutch compounds and what not, and could not give opinion to what would last and what wouldn't* _________________ 81' 931 |

Let's see, the clutch that usually has to move a 4500 pound truck is now in a less than 3000 pound car. Assuming the pressure plates have about the same clamping force and that the Ford clutch can handle frequent runs to 6000 rpms, my guess is that it will outlast the OEM clutch.
Numbbers, could you measure the distance between the clutch arm and the front of the inspection hole? The new spec in the shop manual for the OEM clutch is 18mm. |

look at it this way the clutch disc is used in ford mustangs w/ 5.0L of displacement, so it can handle the power and then some, I doubt it would wear out faster than a factory clutch _________________ 3 928s, |

But with the turbo spool up being like a sudden jolt, and frequent, wouldn't that be like letting loose on the Bronco all the time?
I also though there was a differance in clutches through materials used, ect...
Like I said... I wouldn't claim to know about these things... I'm just thinking about it. _________________ 81' 931 |

it is not HP that kills them but torque, and the 4 cyl turbo will have WAY less torque than the V8 _________________ 3 928s, |

Lizard, didn't see your reply when I posted.
Wife dragged me away when my figers hit the keyboard, (controling B****).
Now that you mentioned the 5.0, I have no question this would be a good option. Thanks _________________ 81' 931 |

I'll be installing a Bronco II disk I got from AutoZone this weekend. $29.99 + $6 core charge. It's a little different than what Numbbers got, in that mine doesn't have dual springs. The major difference I see between the Ford and OEM disk is that the acutal hub on the Ford disk is shorter. OEM is about 1 3/16" deep, whereas the Ford hub is right at 1". Although it's an aftermarket, the metal piece has the Ford logo stamped into it (probably a re-manufacture of a Ford OEM).
Click the photo for a dozen or so photos showing the differences. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Paul, next time I go underneath, I will measure for you. But, the disks were the exact same thickness.
Yes this is the Bronco II disk, not the Mustang. But Paul has the weights correct. Plus the Bronco II disk is the same for V-6, Gas 4 banger, and Diesel 4. Both the V-6 and the Diesel will have more torque than the 931.
I bought mine from Autozone also, so I don't know why the dual spring verses the single. maybe a different OEM. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

Not that manufacturer OEM parts are ALWAYS better; but I bought mine from old man FORD. Yes, it was nearer $70; but Autozone, TrakAuto, etc, change suppliers from one day to the next and I do not trust the quality of the rebuilds. I don't trust the quality of ANY rebuilds. But figure buying from the OEM might be slightly more reliable. Still less than half the cost of a Porsche disc. _________________ John
