Porsche properly procrastinated and in early 1975, the new Managing Director of VW met with Porsche leadership and reached an accord which would see the 924 built in a VW factory in Neckarsulm, which was on the block for closure and was located twenty-seven miles north of Stuttgart. It was a win-win solution. Porsche would own the design, the tooling built so far and be the responsible manufacturer of the Model 924. Volkswagen employees would build the car, order and/or supply the parts, keeping their jobs after all. |

So I guess when someone accuses the 924 of being a glorified VW, we can at least say if it wasn't for the 924, there may not have been any VW's in the '80's if Porsche wouldn't've bailed them out. |

Kike, Look for a steering wheel made by Porsche that was an option and that is an extended wheel that is about 2 inches longer and therefore closer to your chest.
As for us shorter guys Porsche had 1 in aluminum spacers under the seat racks to raise the seat. I have both the wheel and the spacers on two cars. The spacers for the seat lets me sit higher so I can see better. I am only 5ft 7in. tall. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I keep mine close to stock. The engine compartment mods I've done are pretty simple and could be easily reversed. Exceptions would be the air:fuel mix gauge I put in the dash - drilled a hole for that, but it looks like it could be OE to anyone that doesn't know better. Also replaced the clock with a turbo boost-vacuum gauge and have about a roll of duct tape holding the drivers' seat together. The original radio is long gone too.
Oh yeah - there were some other non-cosmetic changes. Stiffer front springs and stabilizer bar and a stabilizer bar for the rear. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Mine's staying stock bar perhaps eventually having a s/steel exhaust system made for her - though that would be purely for longevity than to modify the car... i like the way the car looks and drives just the way it is... _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

Why do I care? I really donīt...In free countries you can do whatever you'd like.
the reason for my post was only to bring an interesting topic for discussion.
I know what I like and for my taste some modifications are beautiful and others are not.
If I had the money to have another 924 ( or better yet a 944S2 ) I probably would choose to keep one car " classic" and the other with some nice mods. (without going overboard) _________________ Euro 924 1980 N/A

I know what you mean. I have been modifying a 924 for the last year or so, and and love every minute of it... but if I had another Porsche, I would restore it as a Concours car. I was thinking about doing this with a 914, actually.
Incidentally, one of the first mods I did was different seats... If you are 6'2" tall, the stock ones almost _have_ to go.
.... still looking for that perfect car, right from the manufacturer... they don't seem to make them that way for everyone, though.... _________________ 82 924 N/A -

I personally got into the 924 specificly to modify. I wanted an inexpensive project car (or two or three......oops! ) to "practice" stuff on....like welding custom parts, doing body work, engine work, interior work, all that can be done on a car I wanted to try, and a porsche for $500, you can't beat that. And with the 924, it's a cool car to start out with. I didn't buy it to recoup costs or to come out "on-top" and make money on the mods I do, or to restore to concourse, I just wanted a good platform for a general auto mod/repair hobby that I could be happy playing with and proud to own.....the 924 was perfect. |

For me, depends what is meant by "stock"
My car has non-"stock" wheels but they are Porsche wheels (Cookie-cutters). It also has modified suspension and brakes, and the engine and exhaust has been modified. But none of these modifications alter the look of the car (apart from a slightly lower stance on the modified suspension), they just generally improve the performance.
But because, on the whole, the modifications use genuine Porsche parts, I really consider them "upgrades" rather than all-out modifications. I haven't stuck a Chev V8 in it, for example... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
