I know this has probably been covered, but other than fabricating the appropriate engine mounts, how does one mate a small v-8 to the torque tube in the 924?
Obviously, the bellhousing requires modification, and the clutch will be upgraded... but what needs to happed between the rearmost portion of the crankshaft in the center of the flywheel and the driveshaft?
Giving this serious thought. I can pick up a decent v-8 block up around here for almost nothing, and spend less than $1000 for a stroker rebuild kit. I figure $2000 to complete the engine. How much should I plan on spending on mounts and the drivetrain?
I am trying to figure out if the conversion itself can be done for less than $3000. _________________ 82 924 N/A -

This is a forum for this down at the buttom of the page. I hate to think after all that work you will ditch the 2.0 out of your car, but hey a V-8 would be cool especially with your hood scoop.
Can I have you old engine and all the goodies _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

Yeah... I looked through the Engine Swap forum, but there were no specifics or pics... just alot of hypothetical stuff.
I just can't get over the fact that the original engine broke down b/c of bad bearings, loss of oil pressure, the replacement engine worked well for 2000 miles, and now needs a rebuild.... I want something RELIABLE.
My Camaro went over 250,000 miles on the original engine with just a minor rebuild (new bearings and seals) at 150,000. Total cost for the rebuild: $500.
The *$!**!* Porsche went 2,000 miles AFTER a $1500 rebuild and now it needs another one.
I am beginning not to like these little 2.0L 4s. I have two thoughts: a 1.5 liter DOHC twin turbo to spin the heck out of like an F-1 car, or a nice old reliable V8.
If I end up doing either, I will have a garage sale.
For now, I am getting to know my new Neon... and I must say, it is almost as fast as the Porsche... but it feels like a toy. The 2.0L 4 in the Neon is smooth and quiet, 16v, and torquier than the Porsche motor. The driving experience just isn't there, though. _________________ 82 924 N/A -

Actually, I am interested in anything that will get my car back on the road.
I am looking into what it would take to have my pistons installed in that block with new rings, and have a machine shop do the assembly... that way everything should be good.
Just looking at lots of options right now... _________________ 82 924 N/A -

beario was selling a bellhousing conversion for a 3500 rover V8, and his friend was also doing a conversion for a 4.7 ltr version as well.
the rover engines i believe are alluminiun and they are carb based.
you would probably need to have a fuel regulator for low psi but apart from that, i think the 3500 was putting out around 180bhp.
if you include heavier springs in the struts just in case and shot peen the transmission and drive shaft you could make a stonking motor, then add some porting and possibly engine management.
a mini 928 rocket...

The Rover V8 is a much better choice than a domestic smallblock if you want to preserve the sports car handling of the 924. It weighs a little less than the 924 engine, IIRC.
Adie on rennlist is running 10 second 1/4 miles in her nitroused Rover V8 924, so it's not like they don't make enough power
Drag racers in England have been making good power out of these little smallblocks for years, and they are a pretty straight forward swap into a 924. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Thanks for all the tips. I will look into the availability of Rover engines here...
but regardless of whether I have the stock engine repaired or put a different one in, it looks like it will be awhile. I have too much other stuff on my plate right now.
IT SUCKS!!!! I WANT TO DRIVE MY PORSCHE!!!
sorry... those damn withdrawls from not being able to drive a german sports car. _________________ 82 924 N/A -

Adie sent me a whole bunch of pics from her swap, as she did it, so there are some really good pics. I'll email you the links. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
