I recently blew my factory turbo and replaced it. In the process of blowing my turbo, the car overheated pretty bad. The car sat in my garage for about 2 years. I have since replaced the turbo with a known good one and have driven it across three states so any residue sitting in the engine has been burned away. Now when I am sitting at a red light for example and the r.p.m's are low(at idle) the car exhaust begins to blow white smoke. It only does this when the car is at idle though. If I notice the smoke and rev up the enigine above 2000 rpms the smoke clears. At first I thought it could be the rings might have been damaged when the turbo blew, but this should create white smoke always...correct? Not just when the car idles....is there something that would submit my car to extra oil only at idle? Please help...i luv da car and would like to fix it. |

Sounds like the turbo seals/berrings are bad. When bad they will allow oil to blow past them and enter the combustion chamber. If it happens at start up and then goes away its not to bad but if it continues after the car is warm then I would make sure to fix it soon. _________________ 1981 924 NA

it is possible to be a few things
#1 check the easiest bad gas?
#2 pull the charge tube if it is the turbo you will see an oil coating on it
#3 white smoke indicates water, have you checked your coolant level, possible blown head gasket.
I am not saying it isn't the turbo it could be, also the smoke is still probably there over 2000rpm, you probably just arent noticing it as much _________________ 3 928s, |

I would:
do a compression check
do a blow down check if any cylinders are low
do a cooling system pressure check
drain and check the oil for coolant and fuel
check air cleaner for oil
check the intake pipes for oil
check the breather and oil separator
If all of these seem normal, I would remove the header pipe and check the axial and radial play of the turbo. |

Just adding to what the others have said. If the smoke is trully white, it is from engine coolant. In these cars, that means head gasket failure. Overheating is the primary cause of headgasket failure, and overboost is the next most likely cause. So, it is quite possible that is your problem. A compression check will tell you.
However, if the smoke is bluish white, it is probably oil. The turbo seals then to leak oil until you are under boost. So, if you are getting a little bluish white smoke at idle, it may not be a big deal. If you are getting a lot, the the turbo was not rebuilt correctly. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |
