Well, I have finally had all of the snailshell synchro problems that I can stand in my 80 931. What are my options? I have a complete 81 924 NA with a good 5 speed in it, I'm thinking about transfering it all into the turbo. Has anybody done this with any luck? I am wondering if it will hold up, and if the starter will clear with the turbo or will my original bell housing work with the NA torque tube? Any thoughts, comments, or...?

dont the NA uses a 20mm shaft and the turbo uses a 25mm shaft
either fix the snailshell or get a 944 box

Yes the na uses a smaller shaft but I could swap the torgue tube and clutch as well. Will a 944 trans fit into the 931 and connect to the bellhousing?

in order to put in a 944, you would need torque tube clutch and shifter mech,
Dont put the NA stuff in unless you like gears flying

Do the swap to the 944 stuff. Don't use the 924NA parts. Sell them here!

So your saying the 944 torgue tube will bolt onto the 931 bellhousing? If so that would be the best swap, 944 tranny's and parts are easier to come by than snailshell stuff.

The synchro fix really isn't all that mechanically difficult if you have the tools and facilities. I think that it would be a more simple, less expensive repair than swapping in a 944 box. I replaced the 1,2,3 gear synchros last month, and the hardest part for me was breaking free the transmission mounting bolts. If you didn't follow it and are interested, here's a link to my story and photos: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=7970

Haven't been involved in a tranny swap, so can't comment from experience what parts and problems are entailed in that conversion.

How about the rear suspension?

The 80 931 has the support bars for the tranny mounts. The 944 tranny mounts to the body.

I could snatch the rear suspension out of one of my 924na parts cars. I have a complete 77 and complete 81. I've been told that the body mounts should fit the 80 931, but not sure. I will put the 931 and the 81 NA both up on the hoists side by side and do a little pre-surgery investigation. I will probably be parting out the 77 and 81 here pretty soon, even sooner if I rob the suspension out of the 81.

Wolf1 - ...sounds like a whole lot of work and expense to go through rather than just repair what is there. But, I understand the joy (sometimes) of working on these cars and the satisfaction you get when the job is done.

Good luck with whatever solution you decide to employ.

I'm having the same problem and faced with the same decision.

I can't seem to find a new set of dogteeth for 1st gear for my 80 931. Partwerks has offered to adapt a set (new) from a different tranny, but it takes several other parts that are different from the ones already purchased for my tranny.

I already have everything else I need.

The Audi conversion is looking more and more desirable...
