hers the clencher.

look at the right of photo showing tranny attachment. looking at front of motor the intake is on the right ala 924.

also you are veiwing the engine from the front of the car.

stand next to your 924 cars open engine bay on the drivers side looking in and your timing belt will also be on the left and the intake side facing you. tranny to the right.

gotta get that engine.

Oh goody! Now you can go through all the trouble, hassle, and expense of an engine swap for...get this...13 horsepower! Yahoo and yipee! Fabricating an oil pan! Custom motor mounts! All for a road-ripping 123 horsepower!

Can you confirm that the VW 4cyl will bolt up to the 924 bellhousing? I'm looking at building a 924 with a VW G60 powerplant. I've already determined I'm going to have to use a crossflow head, because of the steep angle that the engine is leaning over at.

Howdy Ian, nice to see you're on the board now

I have the bellhousing from a 924 turbo, which is not exactly the same as a 924 NA bellhousing, since the starter is on the other side of the motor, but the bellhousing is the same. I also have a shortblock from a 924 turbo, I can take pics and measurements if you'd like.

If you're willing to put up the cash, I'll ship you my bellhousing so you can compare, and I can pick it up sometime in the future when I'm in your neck of the woods.

VW transverse engines do NOT have the same bolt pattern. 924 is all Audi in that department. Only way to bolt it up is use a Vanagon diesel bellhousing and an adaptor to the driveshaft, but the starter ends up in the tunnel or somethingn like that.

The oil pan is easy - use one from a Vanagon diesel

The 16V in US tune is only 123 HP, but this engine can EASILY be in the 200 HP range with very little effort, and used parts are incredibly cheap (go to Vortex classifieds).

Why not just use the Audi version of the same engine. It has an extra cylinder, 2.3 litres and even more potential. It also bolts right to the bellhousing. These are dirt cheap junkyard engines, since nobody uses them for much of anything.

you could use à 2L-16v engine from a golf GTI/jetta GLX/Passat (B3) instead of the 1.8L-16v. The engine as the same "size". It's got 134HP and around 135 lbs or torque. Here, in quebec city/montreal, you can get a complete engine with all the injection for about 400 CND$.

Some people also use the Digifan 2 Injection on 16v to get rid of the CIS based injection. I've never tried this setup but I heard very good comments about it. You conld possibly find information about it on vwvortex.

Not sure if you are talking about an 88 Jetta style engine....but I know that the 88 year will NOT bolt to the 924 bell housing. I have both in my shop out on the floor right now and tried to see if they would mate. Not even close.

ALL transverse VW engines use the same bolt pattern from 1974 (Scirocco) to date. I am not sure about the 5 cyl in the Eurovan or the new Jetta 2.5.

Audi fore/aft engines use the Audi bolt pattern EXCEPT the 4 cyl VW powered cars, which us the VW pattern. The 924 is an Audi 100LS, so uses the same bolt pattern as 5/6/8 cylinder Audis. The 944/924S carried on the same pattern. That is why an Audi engine of any kind is such an easy swap.

Haha, I'm back again. Are you certain if the 8cyl Audi 32V 4-cam will bolt up to a 924 bellhousing? Hrm.....

Who makes adapter plates for the Audi 5cyl to VW 4cyl for the bellhousing? What adapter would you need to bolt up the flywheel to the torque tube?

Not sure about the 928 bolt pattern, but I imagine it would be Audi (not an Audi engine though).

Don't know who would make an adapter for bellhousing to engine. Lots easier to just use the right engine (and get an extra cylinder to boot).

Bellhousing to driveshaft would be a custom built part.

No need for custom parts, you can use a 931 bellhousing and disc with an Audi pressure plate. This is what I was told by the only person who has actually performed the swap.

I don't think the swap has only been done once.....

I was told by a vw/audi/porsche mechanic when i first got into cars, about 10 years ago, that it can be done, and has been done many times, and a good reason to do it is the audi 5 requires less maintenance.
