Things have changed drastically on my 924. I discovered the vacuum hose between the intake and aux. air valve was leaking so I replaced it. The vacuum leak affected the timing, and the mixture, which threw off my fuel consumption (it was awful that first week of driving it) and made it flood on restart, since I was pushing the hot start button adding even more fuel. It had no power, and ran too hot (which thinned the oil and caused low oil pressure). I reset the timing and mixture which made a BIG increase in power, it's running cool, the oil pressure is great, and it restarts when hot with one quick push of the button. By replacing that one leaking hose, and resetting everyting. a whole string of problems cleared up!
Just a reminder that sometimes a simple problem causes alot of trouble that APPEARS worse than it is. I was ready to bail out last week since it appeared that this car had a whole bunch of potentially serious problems. It's still burning rich in one cylinder, but not fouling the plug. I may try some hotter plugs. _________________ Mike

| its good to hear your success........I haven't put in my hot start switch yet and had trouble last night getting it started after a short drive....its still frustrating but I haven't been convinced that the hot start switch works....some say yes... some say no...I guess I will attempt it... |

| I use a toggle switch which bypassed the fuel pump relay to power up the pump. I had to do this when I upgraded to an msd igniton system. I suppose a setup like this could eliminate a hot start problem if you are having problems with a check valve. This is probably not legal in many states, but I don`t have to go through a complete inspection like some of you fellas. Just have to pass smog. |

Lizard....does this reroute of the fuel pump to a toggle work along with the hot start switch system or does it replace the hot start switch system?
I am still considering what to do about my hot start problem (79 924)..I haven't touched anything yet but waiting to see what transpires with other opinions....thanks |

I looked at the old post cant belive none of us suggested a vacum leak. It must feel good to have the car running good.

I just checked the wiring and found the direct wire to the fuel pump then ran a wire w/ inline fuse off a heavy guage wire I ran inside the car to a switch, I didn't do this because I was having a hot start problem, I did it because it is impossible to get the fuel pump relay up here, plus my fuse box needs to be replaced _________________ 3 928s, |

I'm sure you will all call me a sissy for bringing this up, but I thought it might be relevant. When I first bought my car, the PO had wired the fuel pump to a switch in the cockpit because he didn't want to get a new relay. I bought a new relay and removed his switch. The reason I did this was because of my fear that if I was ever in a crash and I was knocked unconscious, I wouldn't be able to shut of the fuel being pumped into the engine bay which could feed a fire. My understadning is that in a severe accident, the engine is typically smashed enough to stop running and the fuel pump relay turns off the fuel flow when the engine stops. I may just have an irrational fear of being burnt. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

The force is strong with this one
The fact that you took the time to repair some messed up rig the PO put in is impressive. The fuel pump relay provides an important saftey feature. If its worth fixing its worth fixing right! _________________ 1981 924 NA

I agree with fixing it right, which leads me to; Why don't you fix the hot start problem right the first time?

Did Chrenan also have a hot start problem? Or are we talking about Mike77? _________________ 1981 924 NA
