Hello! My 1981 Turbo ignition coil shows a primary reading of 3.5 ohms and a secondary reading of 7.46 .. Now, this is not the original Bosch coil and I realize it is out of spec for 1981. However, can you put a modern coil in it and have similar readings and the car will start/run fine? Or do I need to find a coil which is closer to the 1981 spec.
Thanks! |

My 931 came with what I think was a generic coil, and I replaced it with a MSD Blaster II, making no modifications to the original wiring. It's worked fine for around 9000 miles now. I can't remember what the specs of the original coil, but the MSD is 0.7 ohms. If you're just looking for a solid stock replacement, that or any decent coil of similar resistance should work fine. I sometimes wonder if a lower-resistance E-core coil would give you more spark without burning anything out, but hate to push those aging electronics, and a canister-style coil mounts in the original bracket, so I haven't experimented. Basically, you don't need to match the original spec that closely; a little less resistance should give you a bit more spark without hurting anything. _________________ 1980 931 diamond in the rough |
