Need some help in replacing the torque tube bearings in a '80 924, 4sp.
The mechanic took it off, but he still has to figure it out, how to replace those bearings inside the housing.
Any helpful suggestions? |

If you look up clarksgarage.com which is for the 944 primarily, in the maintenance area there will probably be a write up of the process, I believe it is a rather involved scheme. Be aware that if any bearing part numbers are given, they will not work with the 924 as the shaft size is 4mm smaller. _________________ Mike

I have a 944 torque tube but I don't know its history and I may be performing this task in the future. I recently spotted this thread and its one of the more in depth that I have found.

Good point Mike, the 944, 924s and the 924 turbo share the same drive shaft dia. (25mm)
vs the 76-82 924 that had the smaller drive shaft (21mm). My 944 tt is for a future project, I guess I should of made the difference clear in my prior post.
I am surprised that Trybedoor's 1980 is equipped wirh a 4 speed transmission. _________________ 1980 924 N.A. Monaco Blue owned since 1987

Just swapped my 77 with a 5speed turbo transmission, believe it came out a 81 turbo but I wound up using an old mustang clutch that had the same spline count and disc size and it fit like a glove! Think you can wind up mating any of the late style tranmissions as long as you sort clutch out. _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (Dreaming)

Hey McLaren did you swap out the torque tube also? If so what year mustang and engine size was that clutch disc out of? I hear that a bronco II disc will also work. _________________ 1980 924 N.A. Monaco Blue owned since 1987

Yup swapped TT as well, PN is LUK-07-003. If you are running a turbo pressure plate than yes those bronco style ones will work, I am running an NA pressure plate so the mustang one was the only option. Small diameter difference between the two. I didn't have a good turbo Pressure plate and had a cherry NA one laying around so thats why I went this way. _________________ 1980 931 "Salt" Bucket wannabe racer (Dreaming)

Hello,
I have an 82 924 NA, of all the very limited information I can find on TT bearing removal and replacement I have never seen or heard anyone have this 'spacer" nor can I find any info on it even with the part number stamped into it. When I find new complete bearings (probably Constantine's super bearing) should I be able to delete this part? I ask because it has a lot of weight for it's size and do not want to do this job twice because of some weird balance issue.
Thank you for the assistance.

Its a vibration dampener, found one in mine too. Can probably be deleted it weight is important. _________________ /Magnus, Stockholm Sweden

Agree, its the tuned frequency damper and you can probably just leave it out
Technically it was put there for future changes in the car like a new clutch that wasn't balanced. The beauty of these cars is that you can just balance the rotating parts by themselves as they are replaced _________________ 1980 931 since 1989
