I manually set the timing to TDC to check alignment. Once I did so, the rotor was pointing at the no. 1 cylinder, which I thought was correct. When I looked at the WSM, however, I found this picture which suggests the rotor should be pointing toward the firewall. Which is correct??

The important part is what lead wire on the cap it's pointing to, and where on the distributor body. Which is what the picture you shared references also.
Firewall location is incidental.
Also... never seen anything that references pointing it to #1 cylinder; rather, the last bolt on the intake manifold. Not certain how important that is for Turbos, though - and of course that'd only be for early/S1 Turbos.
You should probably also put that information in your signature, BTW... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Thanks, Vaughan. That makes sense. I tried re-aligning and rewiring, but to no avail. Will run through the WSM diagnostics flowchart next. BTW, would a bad WUR keep the car from starting or just make it run poorly once it's started? Sorry if my questions are silly...still in the early stages of learning. _________________ Brent
