My car is getting the engine re-installed next week!

I am ordering some final bits. My distributor was working but the mechanic said it was looking a little worn. I remember looking last year and rebuilt ones were available, I think anyway. Now can't find one.

Is there a rebuild kit? Any place to have it sent to?

I am pretty sure the Porsche part# is 477 905 203 there has to be another VW or Bosch equivalent right?

I have no idea about replacement. Parts Heaven in CA would have used ones and their prices are reasonable. I would send mine to Martin Willis at The Machine Shop in Colorado Spring for a rebuild. He is not cheap, but it would be right.

Part number of the distributor on the car is, Bosch 0237022019, Porsche 477905203

The small black part with the metal tangs is the issue, anyone have a pic of that connector?

When I got my car that fitting was broken up badly I had to buy a box of 100 of those little fittings and about 20' of wire. It is a standard connector size, just not typically available at the FLAPS. I don't have the plastic plug, just a pair of small connectors with some coaxial about 26 ga cable. I'd be glad to send you some of each if you'll pay the mailing cost. Personally I'd like them to fit more securely, but so far the haven't shook off. There doesn't appear to be any polarity to the connections.

Does that broken connector have 2 or 3 pins?
2=variable reluctor (coil pickup), 3= hall sensor, used on some US cars.

This is what the 2 pin VR connector looks like:

Besides the broken connector, bushes are probably quite worn by now too. Rebuild kits are harder to come across these days as are rebuilt dizzys, not available from places like Rock Auto anymore.

Here is a new (Chinese) distributor, with Euro advance curve too for better performance with minimal modification to wiring & vacuum lines. Easiest & cheapest option IMO.

Sorry Mike, that is incorrect. IIRC the left side pin is earth, right one is signal. Search forum, have posted about this a few times over the years but haven`t used a dizzy for years now either. This may be a difficult concept to comprehend with waveforms and +/- voltages and I won`t bother explaining again, but google is your friend for further info. It is 50% likely that this is the very issue you are experiencing in your other thread.

Mine has 3 pins, and if its's just the simple wiring, I should be able to take care of that. The ebay link is most welcome. I may put that one in the car and have the Bosch unit rebuilt.

Anything different when setting up the car with the Euro dizzy?

I would love to find a rebuild kit.

OK, as suspected from what I could make out in the photo, that is the rather rare US only dizzy with a hall sensor pickup. This uses 3 pins/ wires, earth, B+, and signal output which will be a square wave rather than the VR type sine wave. This means the wiring and TIU will be different and the ebay dizzy, although physically compatible, will not be a straight swap.

I`m not familiar with the US models but think this later hall system also uses an idle stabiliser unit, or maybe thats the 931s I`m thinking of? Sure some US guys will know more.

Different ways to skin this cat.
1. Simply soldering a pigtail connector to what is there and insulating with silicone
2. Replacing the plate & connector with the Amazon SMP part, half way to a rebuild there anyway.
3. Using a VR (ebay) dizzy along with a VR type TIU and some basic rewiring. Contary to what you may read elsewhere on this forum, virtually any basic early VR TIU could be used, 5/7 pin ford/ chev/bosch along with OE 924 ones. ($37 @ Rock auto)


Depending on your electrical knowledge & skill, rewiring job may be rocket science or a simple 1 hour bit of fun.

Euro dizzy is same, just different advance curve. See in Haynes or search for diagrams posted in another thread. Actually easier to set up, just one vac advance line to TB, set initial timing to 10* (stock) - 15*.

My car does have the idle stabiliser unit.

I ordered the pickup, mechanic said the distributor felt good, not loose, so hopefully that's all I need.

Gotta find some hoses now.

updating this thread from my main one

The distributor pickup I ordered turned out to have the wrong connector, we think it is Intermotor part#LX596 that works for a 86 Jetta.

The rest of it matched exactly. Of course it was rebuilt into the distributor so had to order the female plug(443-906-236) from VW, should be here tomorrow. Hopefully this will work.




That is the last piece to get this thing running. The connectors on this pickup are blades, I need a backup connector, anyone know of a squeeze type that would work?

The original plug is NLA, so maybe this is another workaround, although you could just use the spade terminals on the old pickup. I don't know the Porsche part, but this is the VW part.

This obscure post Club 80-90 helped me out

So the part from VW does not include any metal connectors, I imagine you could remove from the old connector, but I just ordered the bloody wires too.

That part# is 000979133EA. If you have a cracked housing, I imagine you could use these to attached to the dizzy, or make your own of course.
