The heater in my ‘84 924 Turbo is permenantly stuck on.

I checked the cable and it works like it should. I then assumed my valve must be faulty so I replaced it with a new one from Porsche.

I noticed that the valve looks different from the old one, but basic functionality was the same. However the valve arm in now on the opposite side and the cable is clipped to the top rather than the side.

This is the old one

This is the new one

Today I took the car out for a test drive but the heater is still on.

What am I missing?

I have checked again, and part I was given is correct according to PET. All help would be appreciated.

Disconnect the cable and try the valve in different locations to determine if it shuts off or not
Cheers

Take a look at your images and you'll see the second one is installed in reversed direction.
There should be an arrow on the 'engine side' of the valve pointing outward that would indicate the right flow of coolant.
And it should be attached to the ‘pigtail’ water hose; Is yours?

Thanks Harm! I know the lever is now in the back, but I did this in order to get the clip and cable in the right spot. I guess it can also go upside down?

I wil disassemble it this weekend and test again.

Please first check if there actually is a flowing direction marked on your Valve.
I've circled the arrow I mentioned earlier: The grey triangle on the bottom of the pipe shows the direction of flow..

This valve's part number is the 171 819 809 (VW Golf = type 171).

Putting it upside down could lead to a leaking at the center where the levers arm comes out. …in 20 years or so.
Still, this the better option then the valves you'll find online that have a steel lever arm; they will rust and break, or start leaking quickly at the center.

Good luck!

Thanks Harm, you have been a great help!

It turns our there are two types of heater valves for the 924 (2.0?). Up to '82 and after '82. I was assured by Porsche that there was only one, but after your response on the VW part number I went back to them and now have a replacement valve that looks like the one I removed from the car. What makes this confusing is that the valve I installed has a Porsche number and normally these supersede the VW numbered parts. I am now wondering if there isn't a third version used on the S? And maybe that is the one I installed PET is not helping very much in this area...

Once I have removed the current valve from the car I will make some photo's for comparison and hopefully save the next person dong this job a headache

Congratters!

IIRC the cable on the early HVAC (nicknamed R2D2) is attached to the valve from the passenger side, the right.
whilst the upgraded HVAC system of the younger types like yours have a connection coming in from the drivers side, the left.
Thats the difference.

Did both the valves have an arrow indicating flow direction?
Cheers,
Harm.
