Coming home in stop n go traffic tonight I was watching my temp gauge climb as usual. Suddenly, it parks full left like it lost signal! Two things:
1) car suddenly ran better
B) no idea what I lost!
Need to fix quickly! This is my driver!

how did it run better?
Mine used to twitch sometimes to the left as well, just give it a wee tap on the dash and it will go back to normal.

It cleaned up in the 3200-3500 rpm range and the gauge did not respond to a dash tap, thump or pounding. Very nervous of driving it. (Not sure if the fans will kick on)

The fans have their own thermoswitch; they don't rely on the sender that drives the gauge.

It sounds like the sender has either died or a wire has broken. Unfortunately, the sender is really hard to get to without pulling the engine as it's on the back of the engine right near the firewall.
