If I leave the cross member and motor mounts off can the motor be installed without pulling the tranny back using a combination of hoist and a pair of floor jacks? Or is it best to just drop the tranny and slide it and torque tube back? I'm doing this in about one step above barnyard conditions and hate to be be under there.

Dropping the cross member down should be all you need to do. If you really want more room just pull the cooling fans off, then there is room for days. I've pulled and installed two motors, never pulled the transmission. Just take your time and all should be good.

Good luck!

Cheers

+1 to Ian's post. Do yourself a favohr and pull the rad and fans. This gives you about a foot of extra space and reduces the risk of frustration induced damage

Thanks, rad and fans were pulled when taking it out. We bought the property next door and the 30 year deserted shed where the car now sits was filled with junk and pack rat nests. It took a week to clean out being sprayed down with chlorox water and wearing tyvek suits, etc so it is just uncomfortable to be inside. When the car comes out the building gets torn down.
