While looking in my 79 N/A fuel tank, I removed the sending unit and saw less rust than expected. :) upon reassembly the Gauge is not as erratic because it it is mostly stuck at 1/4 full. The sending unit is the turn in type and not one with bolts. Do I need to replace the sending unit and (if)where does one find this hens tooth. _________________ 1979 924 Diamant Zweischicht.

Even though yours isn't the bolt-in style, I believe this will still apply:

Be careful on this one. A while back I pulled a sender out of another 79 for my 79, and found they were utterly different sizes. However, this was years ago and I don't remember any specifics (other than the string of f** and s** and WTF's that came out of my mouth,) which in retrospect might have been a bit extreme since the issue didn't really cause any real grief, like gasoline in the face or what-have-you.
Anyway now I'm curious as well, can anybody explain this experience? _________________ 1979 924 NA

I pulled it out again and cleaned it up with brake cleaner. There was rust on the contacts at the bottom of the interior so I carefully scraped it off. BUT working on it I broke the ground wire inside the unit. I un soldered it and took apart a braided wire and replaced it with a strand. Alas the unit is still showing 1/4 tank. But the low fuel light is working again. Baby steps I suppose. ;) _________________ 1979 924 Diamant Zweischicht.

I got the level sender to work great with the exception of the low level light. That's ok.
The next thing I want to work on is the fuel smell that I get when I open the window while driving. others say they smell it after a 20 minute outside at idle.
Reading many posts and other sites, I'm thinking of the charcoal canister. I've looked near the exhaust for evidence of fuel out of the top of the tank. Inspected the lines to and from tank with the exception of on top of tank. I haven't removed fuel filler cover yet either.
Suggestions are welcome. _________________ 1979 924 Diamant Zweischicht.

Is your car running rich?
Is there a gap in the weather seal of your hatch right above the lock?
Are the seals good on your taillights? _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I can't tell you definitely. In the cold it is white but cleans up after warming. Water/vapor is emitted from tailpipe. Doesn't smell fuely

Yes. It is a future purchase from Ideola.

yes.
Being from WI you know the great temp to work outside. Should warm up soon to get a good look at the tank.
Where are you in Wi? _________________ 1979 924 Diamant Zweischicht.
