So my 924 has always run "hot", not cooling wise, but head wise. Granted the manifold placement is a cause of a hot ass head, but I feel a bit more oil flow in the head would be highly beneficial.
Today I removed the oil tube to check for clogs. None. I am a machinist and welder(fabricator) by trade. My first thought is to open the existing holes by .010 or so to allow for more oil flow.
Is that a bad thing, or a common mod? Any input would be great. I do not want to do it without some input, as perhaps it could do more harm than good. _________________ 1979 924

That is a tough one to call. I would think it would be time for a plexiglass cover so that the spray pattern could be observed. If you increase the hole diameter then the oil will spray out at lower pressure changing the spray pattern and hence possibly even decrease the cooling. I would think that the Porsche engineers would have looked at that when they converted the motor from a "little truck motor" to a higher revving sporty car motor.
I would look at improving the water flow by opening up the hole back by cylinders 3 &4 and possibly increase the size of the water pipe below the manifold similar to what Porsche did for the Le Mans turbo race motors, the GTR I believe. I remember that someone in Europe did that a few years ago and it was posted on the board. _________________ Mike

I would not mess with the oiler tube as it will likely reduce oil pressure and cause insufficient oiling to the rear of the head where it is needed most. The best mod in this part of the motor is the brass elbows that RC made up. I have a few on hand for resale if anyone is interested. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
