paper intake manifold gaskets - look intact, i have read previously that its not imperative to replace these if they look ok? also for reinstalling, I had some trouble being sure that IU was lining up the hex bolts with the holes in the gaskets. then it hit me that i could have the gaskets on the manifold side with the bolts coming through before i lower it down to mate with the holes. is that the technique?
one of the rubber elbows to the vacuum line coming off of the throttle just kind of slid off. are these types of connectors generic and available from local auto parts retailers? with that tiny bit of oily residue around the vacuum hoses and air intake, I am assuming its slow buildup over the years? should i simple green the nipples where the vacuum hose rubber elbows go?
as far as getting the car running again -- I did soft fuel lines front and rear, fuel filter, and cleaned up injectors. the gas tank is currently empty. any suggestions for turning this bad boy on again? I have the battery out and will trickle charge it today or tomorrow. I was thinking just putting a gallon or two in and see if it starts. any other tips and/or safety precautions. do i just get it to turn over for a minute or two and then kill it and smell around for gasoline? will it probably run rough for some period of time?
thanks for all the help up till now, I have enjoyed this project but I am very ready to get back to the fun of driving this sweet beast. _________________ '87 924S black/black |

The gaskets are only $1/ea?
I usually get the bolts started one runner at a time, while maneuvering the gaskets into place with my free hand. If you prefer, you can use a small amount of non drying sealant (like Permatex "Aviation") and stick the gaskets to the head. Mind the direction. . .mis-installation can block the injector port.
What is the condition of the timing belt? _________________ Toofah King Bad

timing belt will be probably done in a year or two. i think i just had it done last year before i got my house with a garage. will check but i think i am on time with that.
do you know if the rubber elbows for vacuum hoses are 944/924 specific or can i just go to an orielly autoparts?
also thinking about when i turn on the car, do i just put in some gas, replace the fuel pump fuse and turn the car on for a bit and then smell for gas?
is there any additional step to ensure my vacuum system doesn't leak or is that more for turbo cars? _________________ '87 924S black/black |

You can just buy the elbows from pelican or use any vacuum hose for the elbow and curve it to take the right shape.
Air must be metered on these cars so even small vacuum leaks can cause running issues. Just look over everything carefully and make sure you don't see anything obvious. If everything is snug you shouldn't have any issues.
When looking for fuel leaks, just start up the car for a moment then shut if off and look for wet areas. When I rebuild my '88 I was working in the dark and tore a rubber O-ring on the fuel rail that I didn't see till the next day, that was leaking badly, so be sure to both install and check for leaks in plenty of daylight. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

double triple check for fuel leaks and carry an extinquisher for a while (if not permanently) our '87 had an engine fire two weeks ago and by all accounts should be crushed into cube by now for the time and money it will take to bring it back (we're bringing it back by the way _________________ 87 924S project, '83 944 engine,
