So my '88 runs great and shifts great. However, there is a noticeable "clack" that happens occasionally when letting out the clutch. Usually happens when there is a sudden change in movement, like I'm slowing down, then suddenly shift up to accelerate.
I put the car on the lift and did a bit of a root around the bottom and I *think* the sound is coming from play in the driveshaft through the tube.
If I remove the inspection plate at the back of the torque tube/front of the transmission I can grab the center shaft and move it about 45 deg to either side with the car in neutral. When I do that, if I do it quickly/hard it makes basically the same "clack" noise.
Which leads me to believe there is play in the shaft and when the slack gets picked up by the clutch it "clacks" against the gears.
I pulled the shifter and the linkage and bushings appear solid. The shifter itself seems very tight.
The Haynes doesn't help me here, and I have never had the car apart to understand where that play might be adjusted.
Any ideas? _________________ 1973 914

How many miles in the car? Sounds like a possible rubber centered clutch disc failure. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I just pulled the clutch on my 87. The rubber center on my clutch disc was torn apart. The center hub in the disc has 3 steel fingers that catch if the rubber hub fails. This would give you about a quarter turn of play in the driveshaft and a clanking noise when the fingers catch. Hope that helps. In the how to section is a thread on how to turn a cheap Ford Ranger disc into a Porsche disc. I am doing this now. _________________ 87 924S |
