Hello world/
I recently purchased a 78 924 at auction on a whim. Its bringing a smile to my face and my teenage sons love it, they have already put more miles on it than I have (and each own high-performance cars by today's standards). It is my first Porsche, but I'm afraid it won't be my last.
It rained last night and I awoke to a nasty surprise. The drivers' side (LHS) floor was full of water. After researching these boards I found the likely culprit was the cowl drain tube. After some work on "unclogging" it, I found the real issue (see image). The pipe running under the dash into the tunnel is literally rusted through and when testing with a water hose, I saw at least 3 streams of water coming straight down into the floor. The one thing I haven't been able to find on my searches so far is how to repair that pipe. At this point I think my only choice is to cut it off at both ends (or near both ends) and clamp a rubber hose in its place. Is there a better fix? Thanks in advance and I hope I wasn't blind when searching, I really tried and at least found enough info to spot the problem.
Not to worry tonight, its sitting safely under a cover.

| I'm thinking steel wool followed by plumber's epoxy. Should I put the epoxy on the ends (ingress and egress) ? |

If you plug that tube up then you are risking having standing water in the wiper motor area of the car.
Standing water is likely what caused the rust you see already, so I wouldn't recommend plugging it all up.
Cutting is and either welding in a new piece of tubing or clamping a rubber hose on the ends sounds like a more reasonable fix.

Thanks, no I don't plan to plug it (on the ends I was just going to cover them with the epoxy incase there are any pin-holes I don't see, not fill them up). I think I'll try the plumber's epoxy, test it out a bit, if it fails, then cut it out and use a rubber hose. At least this will give me a good excuse to take the seat out and re-cover it while I'm at it. |

well, the pipe disintegrated. I guess I'll have to block off that drain completely and let the water go out the front hole??

fixed. I ran a 1/2 inch PVC pipe through both ends, jointed/glued in the middle (had to be 2 pieces because of no clearance on either end). Used JBWeld Water-Weld epoxy on both ends. Tested and water is going where it should.  |
