It's a 1979 snailshell with < 70k miles on it. Just replaced the shift coupling and put new trans oil in it. Took it for a drive around the block and 2nd gear grinds like nobody's business. I found it difficult getting into 1st gear, but it didn't grind like 2nd gear did.

Is this a tell-tale sign that the trans is a goner?

maybe you installed the coupling wrongly?

What oil did you put in? It can make a significant difference.

Did it grind before you changed the coupler? I'd start by checking the coupler set-up.

+1 to above. Shift extra deliberately, making sure you aren't getting a piece of reverse on your way to second.

Also, what is the condition of the clutch pedal mechanism and clutch hydraulics? Are you touching the floor with the clutch pedal between shifts?

I'm afraid I'd bust it if I shifted deliberately..

The clutch is a cable (non turbo) and the pedal squeaks a bit. Is the cable adjustable?

Update: Went for a drive. I press the clutch to the floor and if I'm careful, I can shift from 1st to 2nd without grinding. However, shifting from 2nd to 1st is impossible without grinding, even at stops.

Brian, if the grinding is an issue only when selecting second gear, the problem is almost certainly due to a severely worn synchro for that gear.

Let me know if you need help with a rebuild.

I was mistaken with my initial observation - it grinds when shifting into 1st gear at any speed other than stopped.

Ah, ok fair enough. I occasionally shift my cars into 1st when I'm coasting < 5 mph to a stop sign or light.

2nd gear lugs really hard when I shift above like 10 - 15 mph. I know the engine is running super rich right now so that might be why.

I'd really like for this whole grinding thing be a case of "User Error". I can't test drive it much because the tires are shot and I'm having trouble sourcing new ones.

So is the clutch cable adjusted to spec?

Unsure - haven't checked.

I do know that the shift bushing/coupling was replaced and is installed correctly and I replaced the gear oil with Sta-Lube GL5. First time I drove the thing was last weekend.
