its a bitch when cold, its a bitch when hot. Always starts though, and runs great once it runs.
Today it dawned on me. After I did my timing belt 2 years ago(ive driven the car 300 miles since) I set the crank and cam to TDC. I then set my ignition timing to line up the cam sprocket mark to the pointer on valve cover.
I only set static timing.
I lost my book, and am having a rough time finding specific info in this forum or elsewhere.
know I set my ignition timing using CYL 1, devac the distributor, rev to a certain rpm, then set it 10 deg?.....
Where do i point my light. whats the mark i look for?
Also: happy end of winter everyone, it feels good to work on cars again. _________________ 1979 924

According to the underhood sticker thread, the '79 US models should be set to 3°±1° ATDC @ 950±50RPM. The Model '79 Service Info booklet confirms the 3°ATDC@950RPM setting, and notes WITH vac lines connected. The booklet also notes a max timing advance of 41°BTDC @ 4500-5000RPM.
To check timing, ensure that crank indicator and cam indicator are both at TDC. There is a pointer on the oil pump, and there is supposed to be a scribe mark on the v-belt pulley, but these are often hard to see, and sometimes installed incorrectly. I don't recall what marks are on the 79 NA flywheel, but at minimum, there should be a 0° setting and scribe mark visible in the window of the bellhousing, which is essentially directly below the coil. The cam indicator is on the end of the cam cover, and should be pointing to a dimple on the BACK of the cam sprocket (there are dimples on the front of the cam sprocket, and these are often installed backward or incorrectly used to attempt setting timing). The DEEP side of the cam sprocket is the BACK side and should be facing the windshield. Use the dimple on this side to ensure cam @ TDC.
Once you have the flywheel and cam at TDC, take the cap off the ignition distributor, and ensure that the rotor is pointing to the plug terminal corresponding to spark plug #1. If necessary, re-index the ign dizzy until the rotor points at #1 position. Reinstall cap. Start car. Put in neutral. Use timing light to set timing to settings indicated above.
Also, ensure that the plug leads are installed correctly. 1-3-4-2 firing order, in clockwise rotation around the ignition distributor. If you install the leads backward, the car will start and run (quite poorly) but will only fire on 1 and 4! So make sure you have the plug leads installed correctly. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Fwiw, on older cars I often emphasize the total advance number over the idle number. Requires advance timing light, but worth it. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I also have a 1979 and it's currently running extremely rich. I thought I timed it correctly but if the correct timing is indeed 3° ATDC, I have it waaay off.
I've never heard of idle timing being after top dead center and according to Wikipedia, this is a really uncommon configuration. Why do these engines require spark after top dead center instead of before? _________________ Brian

Atdc with vacuum lines connected...not that unusual. _________________ Toofah King Bad
