Mine are all power. I'm kinda jealous of your crank windows. _________________ Melanie - 1980 931

Green tartan interior, you don't see that on a Civic. |

Don't be, the PO put in speakers in the doors that get hit with ever rotation & the mechanism feels like it needs a rebuild.

Phase two last night. Hard as a rock today. Now I can move on...

Had to be VERY delicate with the headliner like Morghen suggested. It's never been off in nearly 40 years & it's kind of brittle in areas. But it's off. Some light surface rust & moldy looking foam but overal things looked quite good. I struggled at first with the idea of taking the headliner off & my dear ol' dad said "don't" ... but I gotta do what I gotta do.
The left fender is dented & rusty but no holes!! Tonight brings favour to Gramps & me. I'm happy! I guess at this stage I expect the very worst and anything less than that is a blessing.
I want to preserve this car for many many years to come & I know if I leave this fender to the elements, it's have holes in in in 1 or 2 years time.

I figure I can also throw carpet over it, but in the meantime the mold is dead since I applied a urethane pickup truck box liner to the interior last night. F*CK YOU!
You should pull out the dash, and clean out the hvac.

Big financial hit today but I still think I did the right thing. $1000 worth of body shop supplies including paint & primer. WOW. I budgeted $400-$500. Bought Porsche L97A silver paint just like the factory made this car. But the paint was mixed and the person gave me such excellent customer service I couldn't go back. I spent the extra green for 2 stage paint. I want Gramps to shine up real nice!
Then continued on disassembly.
My goal is to have Gramps painted by next weekend. This is kind of a "restoration-race" that I am going through with the '78... that I did not plan on, but I figure I'm half way towards a paint job with the interior stuff removed... Plus if I don't deal with the surface rust, then it'll get much worse in one or two years of driving in the winter & rain, better to suffer now but be comfortable knowing the metal is sealed.
Disassembled both doors & both doors need to be welded in 2 places.

Thanks brother
Any suggestions on what to do about mirrors? I'd like to to stay authentic which means just a rearview mirror & a driver's side mirror.
I considered running with both mirrors at first but because they don't match (and considering the amount of effort I'm going through)... mis-matching mirrors aren't cool.
This is what came off Gramps today. The one on the left has been retrofitted on to the pass side door (they drilled & clamped it down). I am not so concerned about driving limitations with the pass side mirror gone (if I leave it off... and in fact it would be my preference since the car never came with it)... but I'm worried the mechanic who does a safety inspection might call it. Should I just show them pictures/advertisements to show it wasn't part of the car when new?
I have the choice of welding the holes before repaint. Or maybe the smartest thing is to leave the holes & just plug them with nice grommets?
Or maybe someone can suggest another mirror solution? Thanks!

Restore the car as it was built by the factory, buy an additional door, paint it and keep it just in case you run into trouble...if you do...just swap the doors and you're trouble free. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

I never thought of that option Morghen, now that's good thinking out of the box!
I was looking in the pdf PET catalog & found part numbers for left & right hand side "plain" mirrors.
Now this is in '79.
But that tells me: the Left or right mirror was standard depending which side the steering wheel & pedals were on.
Just maybe it was an option to have both door mirrors?
-------
Out of curiosity, does anyone recognize the mirror on the left in the pic 2 post up? Is it a 924 mirror? |

Its not a 924 mirror, probably some generic mirror. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

| Oh really? (and here I was guessing it was like a generation 2 mirror). Great timing for that information. Thanks bud. |

Previous owner's badge mounting job.... very nice!
Here is how we are looking today. The garage no longer smells like mildew. Near the lower part of the car at the back it is a bit of a gasoline smell & I suspect the is a simple gasket replacement. Not that those gaskets are available anyway.

I need 1 inner tie rod BTW. Where is the best place to get? Are the manual & the power rods different? |
