Mmm Euro bumpers make every 924 better, no matter what. Although a tuck and a rubber shave can go a long way.

Green tartan interior, you don't see that on a Civic.

Well, here we are. Darn this engine is lovely. Was able to remove the head by hand with the headers & cam & some other bits still attached. I suspect a person (or people) could remove the head with the intake manifold attached and exhaust manifold still attached.

I found several wiring things that need repairing. Plus this engine deserves proper intake manifold gaskets. The cylinder bores look good. Bump-stick (camshaft) looks good.

Good news, just make sure the 90deg elbow(should be black plastic) that connects the cam oiler tube to the head is intact. Also check that brass welding if its holding up and if you can check if the tube is not obstructed by the brass weld or something else...this is critical to keep the bump stick in good condition and the performance figures as they should be.

Very good point mate.

Gracias.

From this morning. Wake up earlier than anyone else, so there is no one on the roads.

Ok, if I didn't mention it before, I'll say it now:
the 924 2.0l is different car than the 944. The differences I will describe at a later date when I get to know the car better.

Is it simpler? Yes, I can say that much.

Here is a close up at the components at the back of the head. The oil pressure switch and I *think* the coolant temp sender.

I am suspecting this block was a "swap in" at some point. the heater is not a a/c climate control system, yet the block has what I suspect is a a/c compressor mount. Needless to say it will not be going back on.

I spent a fair amount of time today scraping and scrubbing the block with a "spray nine" and dish soap solution. Old school. Yes it is time consuming, but it'll get the job done.

The lifters are in great shape as is the cam shaft. Unfortunately 1 small 6mm bolt is broken in the head, perhaps for igniton wire bracket (a recent break it looks like, dunno what it's for, but I will attempt to remove it), also I am missing the 2 alignment dowels for head to block. ARE THESE A REQUIREMENT?

Originally my plan was to get in, swap head gasket & get out. Remember, this car hasn't proven itself to me yet. It owes me buster!

...but, c'mon noah. Make it better. You know ol' Gramps will be a shining example one day. It starts with you. It is your baby now. Time to make the right choice.

I realized the difference the first time I went on a mountain run with a bunch of 944s and 2.5 924s. With a mere 115hp on tap I could not pass the slower drivers no matter how fast I took the conrers.

Is that a body bag in the rear of your 944. If so is that some local custom or spcific to 944 owners?

That is the AC compressor bracket. Unless somebody needs it, it's dead weight to you.

Also, talked to one of my trusted techs here at work and the dowels are only there to aid in keeping the gasket situated during installation. It's basically an easy way to throw the gasket on and send it along the production line and know that the gasket hasn't moved since. Long story short, it's not necessary but it may save some headache since you've got the header attached during reassembly.

However the internet says they are absolutely necessary. So I'm of no help.

Thank you PT for looking into it. I studied the head gasket twice and don't think the failure is because of missing the dowl sleeves.

Ok, So my block is painted gloss black. I really dislike gloss black for engines. It looks like the engine is leaking oil everywhere. But I'm afraid if I allow changes here & there then next thing I will be going balls out, and I really need to stay conservative on this one. So, I asked myself "did VW make it black"? Yup... so black it is.

Full day of working on this. Taking my time, but looking to wrap this engine up soon.

Slow going. Yeah.

Also made an error on the work bench and mixed up 1, 2 or 3 lifters ("cam followers"). Next time I will mark them with a pen. The lifters aren't hydraulic. They have a unique adjustment which I haven't seen before. Overall it's a pretty slick set up, but there are 4 different sizes that are used. So I might have to remove the cam shaft & swap them until I can get the adjustment in spec. To remove the bumpstick you need to also remove the distributor mount at the rear of the head. It's interesting getting to know this car and there are as many differences as there are similarities to the 944 na.

I am hopeful I can adjust them on the bench but really it'll probably have to be done when the head is mounted (as per the EXCELLENT Haynes 924 manual).

Anyway here is some pics. This engine is a pretty as any other Porsche engine.

Also, there was a lot of rust and corrosion on steel coolant pipes and engine compartment related brackets. Here are some of those items. I cleaned & painted everything except for bolt heads & the valve cover.
