So I've been going through fixing stuff on this beater 924S. I ordered an air intake box bracket off eBay so now my hoses aren't shoved down into the alternator fan. I spent a couple days fixing leaks into the front floor boards. There were holes that had been previously repaired in the battery tray/cowl area. Undercoating and nylon mesh fixed that up. Interestingly the worst leaking was below the tray drain. There was a tiny crack that all the water ran over and it would come right in the passenger footwell. I've also replace a couple window switches that didn't work.

When I filled the car all the way up with gas the first time I realized I have a fuel leak somewhere back at the tank. I'm not sure if it's stress cracks at the top of the tank or a gasket somewhere back there. It looks like a pretty big job to get the tank out and fix it so I might just not fill it up much in the future.

Next jobs are replacing my bent parking brake lever and fixing the heater control. I'm not sure yet if the lever is broken or the cable is seized up. I've also ordered a set of led bulbs for the interior. Half of the gauge bulbs are missing.

So far I think I've got about $3000 into the car. Probably only worth like $2000. Oh well. I guess I'm having fun? Haha. What's worse is I just saw a really nice 1986 944 on craigslist about two hours away for only $3600.

Money pit. Oh, you found that out~! There are several 944's down here in the Phoenix area for almost nothing. However, even a rust-free 2,000 dollar car will probably have some hidden secrets too! The more you drive them, the more they appear. And, the FOES most likely hasn't been done on most of them.

And the motor just died.

Replaced a couple coolant hoses. Filled and bled the coolant. Took it around the block and it died rolling back into my driveway. Sigh... Hopefully it's something simple. Seems like a no fuel or no spark thing. Sun had just set and I didn't feel like trying to figure it out tonight.

'Seems like a no fuel or no spark thing.'

That, summarizes all engine possibilities~! Just narrowing down where to look is the tough part. Mine died on the track last spring, took a week to figure out the little screw holding the rotor fell off.

New crank sensors may be indicated here, just for peace of mind.

Yeah. I guess no spark, no fuel really narrows it down. Haha.

The car started right up today. So... Could this be cracked DME solder that I've read about? Corroded fuel pump fuse? I just made enough room in my garage to bring it in for the winter. So I've got that going for me.

What Masta Rasta said, the sensors could be failing. The connectors at the firewall usually crumble in your hand when handling, check those out. Then visit clarks-garage.com for actual help in analyzing the sensors themselves.

Sensors and their wiring get flaky, as do the engine harness connectors that the sensors plug into.

Thanks to BMW, we no longer have to pay $100 each for them. . .

i just peeked under the hood just to find the crank position sensors. There are a couple of electrical connections at the back of the intake manifold. It seemed like the bottom once was really loose so pushed it all the way in. I also found this mystery plug with three pins. Anybody know what this is supposed to plug into? It comes out of the the wiring harness off the big bundle right down near those crank position sensors.

just realized those two plugs go to the crank sensors. duh. that might explain things if the one was loose.

That wire goes to a sensor on the flywheel, next to the 'real' crank sensors. It's usually attached to the rear of the head on some bracket. A diagnostic plug I believe. Wire tie and ignore!

Thank you! I won't worry about it anymore. I realized today that I knocked the power wire off the fan relay on the radiator when I replaced some hoses. Would that cause the motor to shut down if it overheated? I only drove it around the block yesterday. No high revs and not a long duration it was running. Maybe 5-10 minutes. I drove the car a little more today just around my neighborhood and no problems.
