In silver, paint is a little rough, but only three or four small points of surface rust. Mechanically seems pretty sound, running and driving well, and passed inspection this month as a selling point.

Currently looking to refresh the whole car. First step I want to take is changing the brake fluids and all the break pads, so would love some insight on how to do that, if anyone has a link to a good guide for the 924S (or 944? is it comparable).

Next thing to do is inspect the belts, and then change if necessary. Already found some guides, but the more knowledge the better. I also have read that the water pump should be changed if you're going to change the belts, as it's sort of a might as well do it while you're in there?

Also, I want to change the transmission fluid, I think I've found a reasonable guide on this, sounds like the first thing to do is make sure the bolt where you pour in fluid is able to be removed before draining.

Finally, the car needs a new front valence from bends in it from the previous owner putting it up on ramps to work on it. If anyone knows where to find one for a good price, that'd be super helpful!

I'm in the Greater Boston area, so I think there are some reputable shops suggested here or Clark's Garage if I get in too deep over my head.

Final thing, have people found joining their local Porsche Club of NA chapter worthwhile? What did you get out of it?

In short, hi everyone!

Clarks-garage.com has a lot of technical info on the 944 (which is essentially the same as the 924S, just wider).

Check that site out and if you have any specific questions or need more info, post up here and we'll lend a hand.

I have the same car as you [mine is an 88 924S]
Here is what I did on my car: You may or may not need all of these items:

New brake fluid - pads & rotors
New master/slave clutch cylinder
New radiator hoses and anti freeze
New power steering hoses and fluid
New timing belt, plugs, wires & cap
New tires
New cam cover gasket
New battery and battery cover [mine was missing - get one if your is missing]

Done. Now I have a trouble free 924S that should last many years.

I've had an 87 924S for over seven years and I love it. Definitely do the belts and water pump right away if you have no record that they were done within the past couple years. Replace the cam tower gasket at the same time, it has a tendency to leak oil on the exhaust headers and the timing belt has to be loosened to remove the cam tower. My timing belt was on the verge of failing when I had it replaced. Some people do the water pump every other belt change, as it typically lasts longer, but it is run by the timing belt so if it fails, replacement is essentially the same amount of labor as doing the timing belt, and tensioning can be complex...I haven't yet ventured into serious engine work myself, so I prefer to let the professionals do touchy stuff like that for me. You could save a lot of money though by replacing the parts yourself and then hauling it to a shop to have it tensioned properly. That's what I plan to do when the time comes again.

If you need any used parts, I have taken apart a 924S and three 944's, so I have a ton of stuff. Don't have a valance, but if I find one from a 924 Turbo my stock 924S one will be available.

A few other useful bits of info: The engine is essentially an early 944 engine (1983 to 1985) but there are a few differences, notably the DME and AFM. The suspension is early 944 offset--however, it uses late offset wheels to fit under the narrow fenders. The front suspension is the same as an 83-85.1 944, and the rear suspension is the same as an 85.2-86 944, which means 85.2 and up 944 front struts won't fit, and 83-85.1 rear struts won't fit.
