Does anyone know the current whereabouts of the Monnet Cognac car? I've seen a handful of vintage pix, but nothing recent.

Probably Herr Freisinger has it or knows where it is. Harm you posted a photo early on of that rally car being followed into an event by what seems to be his daily driver from this photo. Interestingly it has a CGT hood scoop. I suppose the factory gave its driver a treat under the hood of his 931.

@idoela _Porsche’s (Museum) Secret Stash, Stuttgart, Germany. The Monnet rally 924 is parked in the transaxle corner, right underneath 1980’s le Mans 924 GTP, car number 2 (GB).

@pcelenta _ I’m not sure that is his dd. My guess is they took it for promotional purposes (see page 179/180 of Roy Smith's book)
His training-car was a genuine Porsche 924 GTS, the (only) white one, now in private hands and restored seven years ago. But you already knew that

Harm...you do remember that other photo you posted with that car trailing behind the rally car?

good old Walter the car wrecker...he crashed and burned that white GTS (thankfully it was saved! though there seems to be some confusion between it and the "other" white GTS prototype) and didn't he just recently wreck another car.

I love this livery. I am considering using this as a basis for a full-car wrap on WOODY.

External fuel cap, not flap. Non flush windscreen. Modified 924/turbo shell with CGT body?

Sorry Pcelenta, can't find any info on that car other then the license plate confirms Stuttgart origines.

VHS vs GTS.

During 1980 Walter Röhrl became World Rally Champion racing the Fiat 131 Abarth.
Mercedes Benz stepped in and got him to sign a five year contract with Mercedes-Benz —> Ka-Ching! <—
But in December, a month before the season was about to start Daimler management dropped their rally-program
(Mercedes-Benz W107 (wasn't up for the task)) and set Walter Röhrl free by paying him off a few K (900…) on the way out.
Now the rally champion had no team, no car.

Returning to a brand/factory he drove before like Fiat, Audi or Opel wasn't an option now all the driver seats were already taken for the new 1981 rally season. So where to find a car manufacturer that needed a (World Champion) rally driver? Help came from family friend and former rally navigator Konrad Schmidt, who had started a small workshop in Nürnberg and successfully engineered Rally parts/cars since 1976 under the name Schmidt Motorsport.

Early March the unemployed world champion rally driver Walter Röhrl celebrated his birthday during a Sports
Show on live German Television and presented a new toy he would be driving that got homolagated the week before:
The works-build ~280hp Porsche 924 GTS.
This German broadcast might not be that interesting to all ears, so fast forward it is…

> Walter Röhrl Präsentation Monnet Porsche 924 GTS Gruppe 4 > http://youtu.be/Usxs4YkkrP4?t=5m1s

Walter Röhrl & Konrad Schmidt @ studio.

What we see here in these old VHS images is one of the two (or soon to be) works build 924 Carrera GTS Porsche introduced to the rally world in 1981.
The other one was in the hands of Alméras from france who (apparently?) took part in the development of this light 924 racer
and were the first to rally the GTS after it was homolagated on the 1st of March 1981 (homologation # 672).

Their car wearing #19 showed a strong performance in the 25th Tour de Corse Rallye in Ajaccio at the end of april
but they retired because of an accident. At that time the car stil carried the German liscence plate S-EK 2805.
Later on this car was changed over to French plate numbers reading 4171 SG 34.
In 1982 it was this GTS that attended the Monte Carlo Rally with Barth & Kußmaul in the cabin, the red Boss GTS*.
Now where would that GTS be nowadays ?…

Hot Summer of 1981.
During the 1981 German rally competition Walter and his co-driver Christian showed up at the Metz Rally on Mai the 14th; Meaning he missed out three rallies already (Sachs, Trifel and Saarland). Oh-well, better late then never…
btw. Only a few days earlier Walter, being the pro driver he is, competed at the 6hrs of Silverstone in a Porsche 935 Turbo (#22) of the winning Vegla Racing Team.

Metz Rally.
At the Metz Rally near Nurnberg a big crowd showed up looking forward to Walter's performance driving this new racing machine carying the champion number: #1. Sponsor of the team became the French Monnet Cognac brand that set the tone for an unusual paint sceme: Gold Metallic & Black.
Porsche and Schmidt Motorsport worked around the clock to get the Porsche 924 GTS up to battle specs and raised high expectations. Not only was the car new to the gathered crowd but also to Walter and co-driver Christian. They too were unfamiliar with the car and this was not going to be a test drive; Walter was there to beat the competition and become West-Germanys Rally Champion of 1981…
In the field assistance was covered by Barth & Kußmaul who followed in the now known as ‘oldest 931 in the world’ (…005).

> Int. Metz Rallye 1981 > http://youtu.be/FxDoTu93SNg

They made a strong first appearance, won a few stages, had some technical setbacks, even missed a start but lucky for them the field needed to restart and they got back in the game. Although the mechanical troubles they maniged to hold the second place at the Metz Rallye.

International Metz Rallye Stein 14 - 17 May 1981, Stein by Nuremberg

5. Fritzinger/Wünsch (Toyota Celica)
… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

Next big job for Walter wasn't the Hessen Rally: First he did Le Mans!
He and Jurgen Barth had succesfully taken the Porsche 944 LM GTP ~323 times around the Circuit at la Sarthe in 24 hours the weekend before!

Hessen Rally 18-20 June 1981, @ Kirchheim

Back in Germany they came to Kirchheim where Walter was able to take the first place driving the Porsche 924 GTS.

Don't get carried away by Safari …just another rally in West-Germany, folks.
For those counting, it's rally number 6 in the West-German Rally Championship.

Again a strong performance, sadly though no finish.

Sachs-Rally Baltic 4-6 September 1981, @ Travemunde

Taken from the German voice over:
“Weltmeisterlich dieses team, Walter Röhrl und Christian Geistdörfer
gewannen zwar bis hier drei Meisterschafts-laufen
doch Meister sollten Sie nicht werden
Weil die Porsche stal regie es nicht will.
Rohrl / Geistdorfer startete mit Österreichischen-Lizenz
um die anfeuernde Mannschaft Manfred Hero der wir hier sehen
und klaus hopfe nicht die punkten weg zu nehmen…”

In short:
“Porsche favored the 911 to become West-Germanys Rally Champion
and so Röhrl / Geistdörfer started on a Austrian rally license.”

With out Porsche’s intervention the Porsche 924 GTS was destined to beat the 911.
By far the best car out there in the rally was driven by Walter Röhrl;
Another Porsche 924 GTS win!

> Int. Baltic Rallye 1981 > http://youtu.be/38QrfMwmQ3w

Sachs-Rallye-Baltic, 4-6 September 1981

1. Röhrl/Geistdörfer (Porsche 924 GTS)
2. Kleint/Wanger (Opel Ascona 400)
3. Smolej/Hohenadel (Opel Ascona 400)
4. Hero/Hopfe (Porsche 911 SC)
5. Stock/Schmuck (VW Golf GTI)
… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

Porsche favored the 911 to have a chance on West-Germanys Rally Championship
and so Röhrl / Geistdörfer started on an Austrian rally license
to take pressure off the german championship.
It seems Porsche didn't want the 924 to take the sport seat.
Surely it would cast a shadow on the 911…
… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

Drei-Städte-Rallye, 9-10 Oktober 1981, @ München

At this point the Porsche 924 carrera GTS was no longer rallying. It was Hero’s mission to beat Stock and become this years winner…
By now Röhrl and Geistdörfer attended the WRC at San Remo and had signed a contract with Doduco to drive two German Rallies and rallying another three through Europe. Together with the brothers Almera’s they had started preparing a Porsche 911 SC.

1. Kleint/Wanger (Opel Ascona 400)
2. Stock/Schmuck (VW Golf GTI)
3. Hero/Hopfe (Porsche 911 SC)
4. Demuth/Entress (Audi Coupé)
5. Mattig/Stadtler (Opel Ascona 400)
… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

Over the compleet rallying season of 1981 the 924 team placed them selves on the 17th place.
Manfred Hero in his Porsche 911 took second place instead of the first place he was aiming for…
First place was taken by Stock/Schmuck in the VW Golf GTI.

Enjoy the music
Kind regards, Harm.
