Look in Clark's Garage for a write up. Not sure if he covers the automatics, but much of it is the same, other than you have a clamp up near the damper on the torque tube that has to be dealt with.
I have never worked on automatics, so not sure of the details.

Here's a direct link to the page that KD is referring to.

Also, due to the expense of the damper, some have swapped in clutch. It is a cheaper solution; and while I've also never worked on an auto, I have sold a few old clutches for that purpose. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

| The biggest difference is the way the clutch & the damper are attached. On the automatic, you remove the bolts that attach the damper to the flex plate, leave the damper attached to the driveshaft, move the TT back & then you can remove the damper from the driveshaft. There is a clip holding it on. The procedure for removing the clutch disk won't work for the automatic. |

All he needs to know is how to remove the coupler like KD already mentioned. There appears to be a bolt holding it in place, not a "clip. After that, the rest is exactly like doing a clutch, but easier since you won't have to mess with the fork.
Also, where is this "flexplate" that he needs to remove bolts from? _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

The clip is #25, you can't slide the driveshaft out of the assembly with it on.
"Flexplate" is another term for flywheel on an automatic, it is bolted to the crankshaft (neither are shown). |
