|
|
I went to the salvage yard today and picked up an intake w/throttle body and an exhaust manifold (with no cracks) from an 82 931 to replace the broken intake and cracked exhaust that I got with my car.
I was looking at the rest of the engine block with bell housing, head is still installed (timing cover still on so I don't know if the belt is broken). I did notice that the pulse sensor was missing and looked like it has been missing for a long time. I think the car may have made it to the yard because the PO couldn't source a new sensor.
I think that this long block may be a good candidate to pick up for parts.
My intention is to put a wrench on the crank pulley before I buy, but what would be a reasonable price for this package, (1) if the timing belt is intact and the engine turns over freely, or (2) the belt is broken and therefore probably bent valves in the head?
I do not know how many miles the engine has on it, the gauge cluster was already gone from the car.
Just trying to make an informed decision on whether this would be a reasonable parts investment.
Thanks

The fact that 931 long-block engines are a dying breed, get it! Get the transmission, the torque tube, the fuel pump, the accumulator, the nose piece too, the front fenders, the shift lever and plastic surround base. Not sure what prices your yard charges for this stuff, but, if the valves are bent, a negotiating point for sure, it's still worth getting. Anything you can unbolt get it. Maybe they'll sell you the whole car? Even the five lug torsion carrier and front set is worth getting too. Also, the steering rack and lower steering sector. And, the gas tank. Lots of crappy wrenching, but you don't want these parts to go to the crusher. I cannibalize these cars and 944s if I see them in a yard. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

pop the valve cover and turn over the motor by hand, make sure all the lifters go up and down, this will confirm if there are bent valves... _________________ 1981 ROW 924 Turbo -
