|
|
In order to help manage the heat generated by higher boost (12lbs vs. 6lbs) along with the CGT intercooler, I’m looking into upgrading the cooling systems on my 924 turbo and need some advice.
-Coolant system: -currently have stock 924 turbo rad and fans
-want to upgrade to 951 rad and fan, thoughts?
-Oil cooler:-currently have stock 924 turbo oil cooler
-would like a bolt on larger cooler, suggestions? thoughts?
Feel free to add your 2ȼ

| one thing you might want to consider is adding something like the CGT radiator cooling duct work. If you have the euro 924 workshop manual you will see some detailed photos on how it is configured. I am not sure what you are running for a bumper/spolier on your car..but on the CGT it is duct work to push more air up into the radiator from the middle part of the front spoiler. unfortunately, the parts are NLA but are fairly simple folded pieces of metal. |

Here's my two cents (although it costs more than two cents):
Custom rad (thicker core, increased capacity):
Custom fan setup (modern efficient fans, higher cfm with lower draw):
Belly pan (improves flow through radiator at speed):
All of the above is 100% bolt in, stock hoses size and location, nothing hanging past the body, etc.
As for the oil cooler, I would stick with the stock unit. I think it is a very high quality piece that is well integrated into the car. The only thing I might consider is adding ducting around it to improve air flow.

Another idea here would be adding a 944 or 924S air guide while the radiator is out. It is a fairly simple piece that directs air to the top of the rad. I have one off, I'll take a pic of it later today and post. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Agree with all that's been said, plus lower range t-stat and fan switch. I've done this on all my turbos and I like it because the fans come on early and prevent the car from every getting into the death spiral heat soak. That, and add water wetter. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thank you for your input
-Ducting is definitely a good idea and will make some for the oil cooler.
-The rad and fans looks good but a bit out of my budget, I contacted Ran Davis and they are asking $766US for the rad.
The reason I mentioned the 951 rad is because I believe they are better than the stock 931 and I have one in the garage. All I would need is the fans and shroud from a 951, which again I would assume that they are better that the 931. Thoughts? _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Yes, 951 rad and fans will be better than 924 but not as good as a custom setup. The 937 has the same rad and fan as stock NA 924, and it does just fine with 12 psi of boost and hard driving. No reason the 951 setup shouldn't work for you. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

When you guys say custom fan set up, are you saying you guys made them yourselves or you know of a vendor? I used to have a custom twin fan upgrade on my 928 and would love to find something like it for my turbo as well.
Also what exactly turns the fans on? Is it the sensor mounted on the radiator or one of the ones on the back of the head? Did you mean a manual switch or a lower activated temp switch? _________________ 1979 924 (Daily driver EFI)

The most important question, how is the car used, street or track? _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

My red car has a K27 hybrid turbo running up to around 1bar. I drive fast sometimes and i have no cooling problem...its the standard 931 cooling system.
If you are racing the car in the summer then you can have a problem. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Not really sure if 951 unit is "better". . .it does slightly increase capacity and is lighter, but an aluminum core does NOT cool better than the 931 part. And doesn't the 951 piece hang below the body work, or was I wrong about that?
You might also call around Ontario. . .there could be a radiator shop that can produce a custom rad cheaper than Davis.

Installing this on a toofah while the radiator is out is a no brainer, IMO. I'm sure they get thrown away with regularity at the bone yard. _________________ Toofah King Bad
