Hello everyone,
On my local Craigslist, there is a 924 for 2 grand. The ad doesn't have much more than a single picture and some vague descriptions, but does this look like it could be a good deal? He says some gauges aren't working, how expensive of a fix would that be? Hopefully going to go out and look at the car next weekend - anything I should look out for? $1000 tops. I love when people say a 924 has plenty of power. They are so full of crap these cars are ridiculously slow.

Thanks for the replies everybody! I have absolutely zero mechanical knowledge, and I'm still in school, so money is unfortunately a bit tight for me. How expensive would a 924 in this shape be too maintain? I really want it, but it maintanence costs are too insane then I don't think I'd be able to afford it. How often do these cars break down, and how expensive do repairs usually run?

I'd say the gauges will be the least of your problem if that quality body work is any indication of the rest of the car.

"best offer I have got is 1,000 and I'm no way going to sell it that low" is an indication that this is another craigslist guy who think he has gold where he only has a car that's apparently worth 1K.

I'd pass personally, I could never drive a car that was 'painted' that way.

A good, well maintained 924 is a very reliable machine and will give you a lot of pleasure. The underlying concept is sound and reliable, and is a good a car as any to cut your mechanical teeth.
Be warned though, if you have to pay someone to keep it on the road you might be forking out some cash. That been said the internet, specifically this site, is full of good info on these cars.
I say go have a look and a test drive with someone who has mechanical knowledge AND you trust.

I'll be honest with you, the 924 isn't slow.
Last September me and a couple of 924/944 fans organized a "coffee and drive" event and there was my 924 turbo, a 944 turbo and a 924 NA....i'm really honest when I say that we did not drive slow, and the NA was right there with us, I have never seen the NA fall back or felt that it isn't moving fast enough. Its slow for a drag race, that's clear..but in the real world its fast enough.

On topic: if you really want that car get somebody who knows 924s to look at it. If its in good shape and you treat it well it will be reliable and wont break. If its got hidden problems its most likely its going to sit for a long time on your driveway.

If you cant afford to pay someone to fix and you cant fix it yourself; how do you plan to even use this car?

I think you should save up your money and buy a Honda/Toyota instead.

Here in California you can see a bunch of these cars (944, 924 ,928, I have even seen a complete 968) in the junkyard because of kids like you that don't know how to fix cars and cant afford the parts for repairs.

Sure maybe you can afford the initial purchase, then what? How do you plan to pay for the accumulator, WUR, and the brakes? The list goes longer but just trying to point out that there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche especially if you don't have any mechanical experience.

Forget about this car and move on would be your best bet unless you like money pits and headaches.

If you want a reliable sports car it's hard to beat the Miata. You can pick up a good one for 3000-4000. By the way the N/A 924 is slow. Anyone that tries to convince you otherwise is either delusional, in denial or both.

Sorry, I keep forgetting about the darn 90hp(?) version US got instead of the 125HP the rest of the world got when buying a 924. Yes, the US 924 is slow.
