Aloha!
Or greetings from Hawaii,

Been daily driving my 87' 924S for about a year when the clutch finally started to go. Took a few weekends but I completed the job with a buddy of mine. Once everything was back together we attempted a test drive but the engine wouldn't turn over.

Previous owner said the ignition on the steering column was shot so he rigged up a switch for the starter. This switch worked fine up until the big clutch job. Checked the starter motor at a shop and it works fine(although they said they didnt test it under load), tested the wires on the starter to make sure they're getting power and they are. Threw in my buddies battery from his car which has about 100 more cold cranking amps than my battery into the 924 and just got a click. When i turn on the ignition and hit the switch, the starter makes a smal click but thats about it. Got so frustrated that we went and bump started the car and drove it around the block a few times just to feel the new clutch. Happy to say that it drives like a dream!! (Been dailying a 95 Camry for the past month...its horrible...FWD, blown struts, and auto trans)

Im not to tech savy when it comes to eletrical, as ive only owned mk1 and mk2 VWs before this car. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas please post up and help a bro out. Either way Happy Holidays everyone!!

I'll throw up some photos the next time i get a chance!

Mahalo,

Sounds like you may have a ground issue. Take a look where the ground attaches to the bellhousing and make sure it is clean, you may also want to look to see that you have solid/tight connections where the wires bolt to the starter.

The ground wire to the bellhousing can go bad. Based on the heat/cool cycle where this wire runs across the back of the engine compartment can cause the outer insulation to crack which will allow moisture to enter and cause corrosion in the wire which will cause higher resistance. Check this wire carefully and replace it if it is looking suspect.

Some starter motors have two spade tips on the solenoid. If you have two, try moving the wire to the other and see it the solenoid trips. (Assuming that you removed the wiring from the starter while doing the clutch)

Eh, don't worry, I drove my '88 on the track, on 3.5 cylinders~! Had some shake at idle I finally got around to investigate. Turned out my Beru wires needed replacing; number three spark plug end was fouled . Ran my timing light on all four cylinders and number three was missing quite a bit. The green death of copper rust was quite evident. Just installed the new wires a few minutes ago, nice. And, probably more power!
