I recently picked up a 1981 931 that suffered a broken timing belt. The head has already been repaired and is ready to go back on, but the intake manifold was cracked on all four runners. The PO had the manifold welded but it doesn't look so good and it will require machining to remove the excess weld and provide a flat/smooth sealing surface.

My question is, will an intake from a 1980 931 fit on the 1981 931?

I have an opportunity to pick up an intake from a 1980 and want to make sure it will fit prior to purchasing.

The PET lists a 931 110 059 01 (M31.01/02) without calling out a year, and 931 110 059 05 (M31.03/04/50) for 1981.

Thanks,

The throttle body is different between the two and you'll want to keep the later throttle body since it can be rebuilt to alleviate the common shaft leaks that happen over time. You might be able to adapt it, but then the boost pipe won't fit, etc.

I am curious how they managed to break the manifold.

This would be my guess, I will have to ask again when I go to pick up the car. When I was looking at it the PO said it was cracked when he took it off.

obviously, he took it off after he hoisted the engine out by it, and prior to that, of course cleverly dismantling its strengthening sheet metal bracket.
