So once the diff cover is removed from the side of a G31, does the diff easily pull out and be replaced by a Quaife LSD without any other stripping of the box? Haynes and FSM are no help and couldn't find anything here via Google search. | You'll have to strip the box. Because the diff must be shimmed sided to side and the main cluster with the pinion shaft will likely need to be shimmed in or out when replacing the diff or carrier bearings, the trans will have to come apart anyway. The diff is not plug & play. |

You shouldn't have to do anything to the pinion shaft. The only time you would need to change this is if you replace the shaft bearings or, of coarse, change the ring and poinion. The diff center lines will be exactly the same. But you will need to adjust the position side to side with shims and adjust the bearing preload. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

Ideally yes but it always seems to need adjustment, that's why I said likely. Should have said possibly. It depends on how much wear it has.
The races will have to pressed out & in to adjust the shim size for the carrier bearings, the gearset will need to be removed to check the diff backlash and the pinion will have to be removed to check preload so trans removal will be necessary which was carrera's concern. Sorry I didn't explain it better the first time. |

Don't have the inclination to do a strip and build. So the Quaife will stay in its current gearbox and I'll fit that complete and test. I now have four boxes. I'll collect some necessary rebuild parts and rebuild one next year. Think I'll road test each box and see how each performs. Should be able to build one good box out of four!! _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife
