Well i spent a while sanding off the bonnet scoop, i'll sort some pictures later. It is quite tricky getting a good finish around the joint with the bonnet, not sure i am still happy yet, maybe more fettling. took 3 or 4 times with filler/sanding.
i have also noticed that the line of the hole in the bonnet i not quite parallel with the scoop opening, this is where the fibreglass isn't quite straight. so i will have to trim out the hole to correct this, it doesn't look quite right from the front.
Next up is the front GT bumper, this is a massive chunk of fibreglass, wobbly and flexible so it will need to be bracketed, supported and braced. But still needing adjustment in the brackets to align. I have been giving this a bit of thought and have come up with a replacement bracket design (over the 2 orginal ones)
I'll post a pic of the design later, i think it should give enough adjustment fore and aft to get its location correct, then some more 'outriggers' may be necessary to give it some stiffness/rigidity. |

Well after a bit of touching in with the filler, the scoop is getting there. Just one more bit of sanding, then i'll prime it up.
As I said, I had a few thoughts over the front bumper brackets, they need to be adjustable to allow for the fitment of that fibreglass front. I came up with this as a basic idea. mounting plate for the bumper welded to a bolt that can thread in and out. thus.
after a bit of digging in the garage for parts I cam up with this, cutting and welding a short section of box steel to a M10 thread adaptor, and a baseplate shaped from the original bracket outline
I decided to use box section rather than tube as it will be the first point of impact, so I want it to deform first, rather than the front metalwork of the car. Tubing would have been stronger and probably would push the front metalwork in rather than bending
Still a bit more work to do, but its getting there. |

Nope that scoop will outlast the bonnet !!
Well the bumper fitment is quite tricky, not the best moulding and the panel fits are a bit off.
got the brackets I made mounted up ok.
The bumper itself is all fibreglass, so I have re-inforced all the mounting points with metal plates, bonded to the glass.
the bolts through held the plates in place whilst they bonded, but I will use the holes to mount to my brackets. the bolts are covered by the lamp trims.
so can access and remove easily.
also I have re-inforced the sides/ends where they mount to the front wings
its a fiddly job to line up. this is my first attempt
the ends of the bumper did not line up with the wings so that needed easing and the shape around near the lights wasn't quite right, so I filed/ground back the metal wings to suit as there was not enough 'meat' on the bumper (it would have weakened it)
getting there, but still a way to go.
need to start thinking about a roll cage next to stiffen the car up |
