|
Hey guys, I've been toying with the idea of setting up a D-I-Y workshop and garage for classic and performance cars in Melbourne. Very similar in concept to Kustom Kommune http://kustomkommune.com.au/ but for cars.
I'm planning on offering some combination of hoist, workshop hire and project storage plus maintenance services but I'm interested to hear opinions about what people would want and pay for this kind of thing. Insurance for shared spaces is pretty expensive and where tools are involved it's even worse but I still think there is an opportunity for a good community of people wrenching and helping each other out.
I've done up a little website for it and I'm looking for some expressions of interest before I take it further. What do you think?
http://monocoquemc.com.au/
Vehicles are to be stored in separate roll up lockable garages at the back of the main workshop to protect them from dust and workshop accidents. Also proposed is onsite management and a web interface to the security system to keep an eye on your beast 24/7. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

sounds cool...
me and my girl just looked at another property to buy and it has a 40x120 garage, completely insulated, full cement slab, all steel, with full central heat but has (from back to front) a rec room with pool table (full of 220 outlets x6), full kitchen, full bath, and 6 bedrooms in it (snowmobilers retreat) right now, but still enough room for 2 cars in the end where the overhead door is..
I think im going to tear out the last 2 rooms closest to the front garage area to extend the shop and open somewhat of a repair shop out of it, like your saying but much less professional/formal....
property also has a 30x40 garage with slab and all steel that is non insulated.. and a 3 bedroom 2 bath newer (1997) trailer with a sunporch all in awesome condition.. in 1.65 acres of grass bordered by 14' ish pines like a great hedge..
there only asking $74,900!!! to the bank we go tomorrow!!!
that would give us 2 rentals and a mortgage vs 1 rental and no mortgage and no garage as we are now.....
yeah im excited
and I too hope these shops can make some money _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

This reminds me of an idea on the dutch 924 forum, but they wanted to do it with a club of 924-owners, to rent a garage with each other. But that didn't succeed. The concept on this page did succeed: http://www.bollensleutelclub.nl/cms/ _________________ 911SC - 1980 |

This is a good idea but I don't believe you should store for periods longer than a month or so just because people abandon projects all the time and you could end up with something there for years taking up space that someone else could use.
We actually have something like this in my hometown although it's less classic restoration and more general repair on modern cars and trucks.

While it won't be a direct comparison due to different insurance regulations it might give you an idea of where to start. _________________ Melanie - 1980 931

Green tartan interior, you don't see that on a Civic. |

Yup I've got a day job, this would be a hobby business. I think the main thing that people want is hoist access.
Storage and other services are secondary to that. Local places charge about $200 a day which I think is reasonable. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev
