Hi guys doing my head gasket at the moment and I really need to clean all the rust out of the coolant system. The engine is in the car, unfortunately I can't really remove it (no space/time/tools). Anyway anyone have any solutions on how to get the rust out prior to running coolant flushes and stuff. Basically I want to do a preliminary flush before putting the head back on and reassembling.

I don't know if that's a good idea... you definitely don't want to get water into your cylinders...

maybe a shop vac and a round wire brush you can knock the debris off with and suck it up with the vac...

you don't want rust dust in your cylinders either..

A round wire brush is about all you can do right now without making a block off plate. Knock loose what you can & do a chemical flush when the head is back on. Flush it without the radiator, heater core and thermostat installed. Block off the ports, other than the radiator hoses & flush with water. You don't want large chunks to block the narrow passageways in the heater core and radiator. Flush them seperatly, reverse of normal flow. You do want to keep the junk out of the cylinders, lower the water level in the block if you need to and keep a rag between the port you're cleaning and the cylinders.
