Anyone know why it takes me 5 to 6 turns on the ignition before my car will start? it's warm outside so it shouldn't be reluctant to start. _________________ 82 924

it will start for like a sec then shut off, does this several times before it finally stays started, fuel pump is good and has a new fuel relay. _________________ 82 924

Sounds suspiciously like a fault in the cold start function. Could be the cold start valve itself, the thermo time switch, or the wiring between the two.
It could also be a fault in the warm-up regulator, but I would check the cold start valve functionality first, as it will be easier and cheaper to diagnose and repair.
Also, don't forget that it could be more than one problem, so if/when you find one problem, you should still continue to diagnose the rest of the potential faults to rule them out as well.
- Remove the CSV from the back of the intake manifold and insert it into a glass jar (leaving the gas line and the electrical line connected). Crank the engine and observe whether the CSV squirts fuel.
- If you have fuel from the CSV, then most likely the problem is with the warm up regulator (WUR).
- If no fuel from CSV, you need to determine if it's a mechanical fault in the CSV itself, or an electrical fault preventing the cold start signal to be sent from the thermo-time switch (TTS) to the CSV.
- First, check to make sure the blue connector is connected to the CSV, and the brown connector is connected to the TTS (sometimes this one will fall off, as the TTS faces down, and if the spring clip on the connector is damaged or missing, it can easily drop off).
- Look in your Haynes manual and get the resistance spec for both the TTS and CSV. Check them both. The TTS is hard to get to, as it screws into a downward-facing port on the rear water flange at the back of the head. You may need to remove the coil to gain sufficient room to get your hands down in there.
- If the resistance readings check out on both the TTS and the CSV, then you need to check voltage and continuity on the ground wire and power wire to both the TTS and the CSV. Those wires can get very brittle back there, and it's not unusual to see the insulation cracked with bare wire exposed, or in some cases, completely broken.
- If the wiring and ohm readings all check out, and still no fuel from CSV, then it is most likely a mechanical fault in the CSV injector itself. They can sometimes get clogged, and they do seem to respond reasonably well to ultrasonic cleaning, so you might try that first before sourcing a replacement, unless you have a known good unit on hand that you can swap in.
For diagnosing the WUR, please refer to this thread: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=35734 _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
