So my father sucked me into the Porsche world with is 911. Im looking to buy a Porsche myself and for my first one i was looking at the 924. I was wondering if some of you could tell me some common problems and price ranges to fix these kinds of things. Also just looking for some general knowledge about this car as well. Any help would be very appreciated.

Come on up to the Portland Historics and meet up with some local 924 geeks and we can give you a crash course.

There's some info on 924.org and a brief list is essentially:

Many CIS issues from sitting or poor maintenance. Get a proper CIS pressure gauge set and learn to use them. make sure theres no vacuum leaks, clean fuel system, etc.

Electrical issues due to corrosion on the connections.

Otherwise they are pretty robust and reliable cars. Think of them in terms of an original Rabbit GTi or Audi hatch since there is a lot of shared engineering/parts there. many of which were reused on the 944 and were subsequently improved there.

buy the best example you can afford. Derek, from Redmond, OR, is selling his wife's 79 924 and its in great shape and he's asking about $3500 (its in the for sale section)

mine was a $600 and has needed nearly a complete rebuild due to a lack of maintenance and just broken bits.

Thank you for the taking the time to reply. You have given me a great place to start to look at buying these. I would also love to come up to Portland Historics and talk to somebody about these cars. When would be a good time to do that?

Hello all ye faithful. My brother and I have been following 924.org for at least a year now trying to learn more about what to do with my underfunded 924 addiction Finally got around to officially joining as I will soon have many questions regarding the 81 931 I bought last spring. Some of you saw it on ebay, and yes that's where I bought it. Mistake? Maybe, but I am stubborn and vain so I'm not giving up on the joys of 924 ownership just because of their 'issues'. Both my Turbo and N/A are wrought with the common ones, hot start on N/A, WUR on 931, etc. Many thanks for all that I've learned thus far and great to know that help is out there when I can start tackling some of this! I know there are many midwesterners on the forum and I look forward to meeting you in time.
Andy

Hello...just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. I am the new owner of a 1980 Porsche 924 NA. It has some issues, but I didn't pay a lot (in my mind). It's more of a project for me and my son who is autistic. I am hoping that he may find a serious interest in auto mechanics and chooses to go that path as he enters High School. He is not sure what he wants to do so I am hoping that this might give him a little direction. I plan on posting in other areas, but for now I just wanted to say hello! Thanks![/url]

Hi. I've been using this forum as an information source for a while now and it seems like a good place to ask questions. I've got an '81 2.0 that my brother and I have been working on. We picked it up for cheap and have been slowly getting it to driving condition. Thinking it would make a good rallycrosser. I fell in love with the car when I drove it before we put it in the garage. I have a feeling it may not be the last front engine Porsche in my life.

Hi there, just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Cameron, and I'm a 27 year old guy from Indiana. I'm a huge gearhead, and love wrenching on my projects. I'm very passionate about motorcycles of all kinds, but I'm really into old bikes. My daily rider is an '83 Honda Nighthawk 650, on which I ride all over the country. I have a few other project bikes as well, but the most recent addition to my garage is my '88 Porsche 924S. It's belonged to a friend of mine for about 10 years now, but since he got married and had a son he could no longer afford to keep the car. The 'ol girl is in great shape, and is going to be a "long term" project car. By that I mean, I plan on working on it over time, while still being able to go have some fun.

I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum and looking to you guys for some advise here and there. I really can't wait to start checking things off of my to-do list and getting the 'ol girl back in great shape.

Here is a pic or two:

I've been lurking for a while so I thought I would actually introduce myself. I'm Brian, a proud owner of a 78 924! Just bought it about a month ago, and I'm tearing into it. Dash is out, heater box out, and now I'm starting to clean up the wiring. This board is invaluable and has provided me with alot of information.

I've always liked the styling of the 924 and finally own a "handyman's special". Previously I've owned a Opel GT, Fiat x1/9, and 2 Pontiac Fiero's.

HI I'm a Noob and this is my very first post. Your board was suggested to me by a gentleman who is coming tomorrow to purchase a wiring harness and a fan motor and shroud for a 924Turbo.
It was suggested that I come to this board to let you know of the 3 924 Turbo project cars and 2 non turbo 924 cars and numerous parts such as a 5 bolt suspension setup and k26 turbos and even a spare 81-82 924 turbo engine floating around the shop.
I have had tons of fun with the cars but do not wish to continue my affiliation with the cars and would like to pass them on to those that may want some good solid projects.
Watch the classifieds for my cars!

Hi!

I'm new user from Poland (Gdynia). Since last year I have a Porsche 924 Turbo (931) form 1979. It is a first series model, european version, 170hp, in diamantsilber metallic.

I love to wrenching on my 931 and it is my everyday car (except few really ugly days in winter).

Regards!
Tom

And here are the pics:

Hello all,

I have just purchased my first Porsche. It's 1987 924S. Saw an add on Craigslist and it caught my eye. Have been lurking the boards for a while now and joined up last week. Have learned a ton so for just from reading all the helpful posts. Once I get photos uploaded I will post some pics.

Regards,
Mike B.

Welcome, Mike. Do you know the timing belt history on this car?

I do not know the history of it. I do know it is one of if not the first thing that is going to be done. All in all the car is in pretty good shape, runs drives everything works. Is going to need body work and paint down the line but it is not priority. First thing is making sure it is mechanically strong then worry about the rest. Again so glad I was able to find this place because I feel like I could read on for years to come and maybe some day be able to help out someone in need.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, so I'd like to introduce myself a little. I'm a 21 year old student from the Czech Republic and to be honest, I originaly didn't want a Porsche, but was looking for a Mercedes w116 S class (yes, I know, completly different cars). I was however a bit interested in the Porsche cars, because my friend had a 924, has a 944 and I live in Liberec, 40 minutes of walk from a house where Ferdinand Porsche was born. Long story short, when I was 18 (legal age to have a driver's license in the Czech Republic), I bought myself a 1985 924 NA and we are together for 3 years now.

So here she is:
