Hi guys. New here, but long into 924's. Picked up an 87 project car with multiple el problems and am thinking of going "old school" and converting to a carb(s). Reading an old thread about bike carbs, I was wondering if a pair could be used with 2 "Y" manifolds, or do you really need to use 4 carbs? Not looking to build a race car, just something easy to work on with an uncluttered bay. Anybody done this or recent experience with a set of 4? Would also consider a single downdraft setup of some sort. TIA, Ron.

Thanks Eddie but it's a 924S with the 2.5L mill. Cheers, Ron.

as I mentioned over on Rennlist, I wouldn't bother as it would be more work to build a manifold, bypass/remove/modify the electrical system, replace the fuel pump and modify the fuel system, fabricate/adapt the throttle cable, etc. than it would to simply repair the broken EFI system on your car.

Ensure all of the wiring is intact, check the grounds, then troubleshoot either the DME relay or the flywheel pickup sensors, all of which are common causes for a no start issue on the 924S/944.

Here's a good guide to get you started:

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/ts-01.htm

If you truly want a more simple car. Buy an older 924 with the 2.0L, remove the CIS and run dual sidedraft webers since there is already a kit made for that and the electrical system is more simple (cable driven speedometer, etc). There's also no power steering, drum rear brakes, manual sunroof and windows. Lots of interior and suspension parts interchange with the 924S/944 though so there are some improvements available if you want your cake and to eat it to.

Thanks - I intend to sort it out as is, but assuming the engine is OK, I'd still rather go with carbs. Cheers, Ron.

You could clean up the engine bay with a MAP-based EFI conversion via MegaSquirt (MegaJolt is based off MegaSquirt) to eliminate the AFM.

You could just build an adapter for the stock manifold to fit a single sidedraft carb in place of the TB, then plug off the injector ports and vacuum ports from removing the idle control module, remove the fuel pump, filter

You'll need to basically remove the entire Motronic EFI system (just pull it through the firewall after disconnecting the ECU and main power wire) and adapt the MegaJolt system in its place, configure it to drive the tachometer among other things.

Nice setup Stefan! I wonder about the reliability of megajolt or any other el systems tho, having been stranded on the side of the road more than once by electronic gremlins when "Mercury was in retrograde," LOL. You use a crank trigger? I've thought about it, but for a cross country trip I've been thinking about it makes me nervous - a bit of a Luddite in that regard It is nice and clean tho.
