Hi I have trouble filling the cooling system since the top hose with the nipple split. I spent a stupid amount on a replacement hose online and it was so crap I couldn't believe it lasted a day. Now I can't keep water in the system above the thermostat I just drilled three holes into the thermostat to help it out but still can't bleed all the air out. The worst thing is she spits out all the coolant when I shut her down at halfway on the temp gauge. Driving her in Brisbane's stupid traffic isn't helping sitting still when in the cars manual it says not to sit still to much. Any help to get her bleed would be great I have tried all I know cheers Dave

Release the clamps on the overflow tank and raise it up as much as possible to give the air a place to go?

You could also loosen the clamps on the hoses for the thermostat housing and bleed the system that way (it will be hot and messy, just not as much fun as other things that are hot and messy...)

Otherwise, you could change to the thermostat cover from a 924 turbo which has the bleed nipple built into the housing. You'd have to adapt a different outlet hose, but it shouldn't be too bad to do.

Finally, the stock 924 fan is crap. The shroud isn't bad, but the design of the blades really suck. You can adapt a more modern deraile fan to the stock housing. If you've got a dual fan setup (A/C and turbo cars) then the process the same with smaller fans.

A 944 radiator and fan solution is also an option with a little bracket and hose work and has much higher capacity to shed and manage heat.

That should give you some options and things to think about.

Stefan, what is your opinion of the effectivity of the dual 924 fan system for cooling an NA engine?

Since it uses the same style of poorly designed fan blades, it is better than the single solution, but not at all efficient unless your cooling system is in perfect working order.

Of course as the system ages and the system loses efficiency you'll be in trouble more often than not.

If it were me, I'd make sure the cooling system is in great shape (including using the belly pan with shrouding in front of and behind the radiator) and replace the motors and fan blades with modern, more efficient versions.

and here's an example of the Derale fan I used to replace the broken single fan on my 924:



I discarded their shroud, trimmed the plastic ring on the outside of the fan blades and with a plastic spacer, it mounted into the stock single fan shroud. Made a nice difference in the temperature during the summer here when sitting in traffic.

I'm planning on doing similar with the dual fan setup I pictured, using smaller fans after I get a radiator that actually works since I know mine is pretty plugged up due to the gunk I was getting out of the system earlier and I'll be adding much more thermal load to the engine with the addition of a turbocharger.

Many thanks Stefan for providing the details and images to help the 924 engine to run cooler. Since I moved to the deep South from Texas pursuing a job many years ago, driving in heavy traffic in the summer here has always been a concern.

The Derale Cooling option you describe looks to be worth pursuing as a solution most anyone could do without serious mounting or reformation problems with the shroud. I'm going to give it a try. BTW, I'm learning a lot as well from your insights and tips posted elsewhere on this board.

Thanks guys for replying I have a new thermo fan not the old boat prop fan and a new water pump with lager impellers too. Going to try the raising the tank up to get the air out and if that don't work I'm going to put a replacement radiator in from an older parts car and see if she runs cooler. Thanks again Dave
