I'm fairly certain it's the filler neck seeing that it's 40 years old. it's really bad near the rear vents near the window. Anyone ever experience this?

I know auto-parts stores have generic filler necks anyone every use those? What size?

Any advice? thanks!

I just found several other possibilities with the vent hose, I'll check that now

Still checking

Could be the vent hoses on the top of the tank, or the fuel sender O-ring. . .

That diagram looks like it might be for a 944. It's different.

The fuel sender gasket is on the right side too, and is the easiest thing to check from all possible causes. There's an access hole for it.

If I stop at the first click, the fuel level is at the top of the tank. If I keep going, it will start filling the neck. Once I stopped filling past the first click, I have much less of a petrol smell in the cabin afterwards.

YMMV, of course.

Wade.

That was my experience exactly 'till I fixed it.

I had this problem on a Toyota station wagon......it turn out to be loose hose claps on the rubber hoses for the fuel filler neck.

You might want to check that the hose clamps are tight.

It's Ironic that you just said that cause I popped the cover of for the 10th time and grabbed that rubber piece on the fillerneck and I could twist it with my hand while it slid on the tank and the metal filler neck, I could move it and probably remove it with enough force the way it sat. I took the entire filler neck out and inspected the metal part and the rubber. hate to sound like a redneck, but I put it up to my mouth and closed the other end off with my hand and blew in it, didn't seem like any leaks for the metal piece or the rubber piece. I put it all back together, tightened the hell out of it (you can't move it now) and blew into the tank and it was holding pressure. I next went to the charcoal canister and disconnected the hose to the tank and still had pressure and it did smell like gas so it wasn't crimped off by accident somewhere.

Could it be this easy? like can gas really wiggle it's way out through that little slippage? here are some pics around the filler neck. I really hope this is it cause dropping this tank is going to be a nightmare. I would think the fact that there is pressure being held would mean it's sealed. :/

That black sooty gunk looks and smells like old gas, which would make sense if this thing wasn't 100% tight I seen old gas cans to this type of crap before.

What do you think? I'd say definitely plausible.

just took some throttle body cleaner and sprayed around the area, you can definitely tell an improvement. Before it smelled really bad there like gas. I wasn't sure if it was the top of the tank or not. my nose is a little burned out from smelling fumes atm. I left the cover and the hatch open to air out. I'll go back out there in an hour or so.

Wish me luck!

Just got back from the gas station. I left all the covers off and watched it as I filled it up. I smelled no gas hellz yea!

I still smell a faint smell of gas, but you really got to stick your nose right down in there. I think it's just simple residual or the fuel pump slightly leaking. In either event, I'm no longer scared if someone lights a cigar in my car, lol.

by any chance can these fuel pumps be rebuilt? like is there an O-Ring that goes bad in them? I don't have the funds for a new fuel pump atm. It's more less damp, not dripping at this point, so I am not to worried.

When I has this problem on the Toyota station wagon....the whole car smelled like there was a liter og gas spilt inside....once I tightened the loose hose clamps on the filler neck...the smell slowly went away. Gas smell does tend to linger a little bit ...maybe a few days or longer. I was quite pleased when this simple fix solved my problem.....it could be this was your issue. If the smell of gas is more or less gone in 1 week then I would say this was your problem.

It does seem like this was the cause or a big part of the cause.

Good luck.
