so does anyone know at what point in 1979 (late) that production changed from the outside vw golf/rabbit gas cap to the inside cap and door flap? was there a particular chassis number when the change begins?

See the Porsche PET:
The different fuel tank setups show production chassis
numbers for reference when first equipped/started.

no luck on the PET....76-79 shows the old style and the 80 forward shows new style...no chassis break down.

If I remember correctly Vince, your car is a very early 79 like mine...with .short 924XXX chassis number.
My observation is that the switch to inside cap and flap was a model year change....so any car deemed a 1980 has the cap and flap. My initial theory was that the cap and flap came when the switch was made to the 93A01XXXXX chassis numbers. But it is not the case because there are mid/later 79 cars with the 93A01XXXX chassis numbers and outside VW gas cap.
why does this all matter? Just researching the CGT and GTS prototypes and trying to determine if there was any rhyme or reason when Porsche built them.
cheers,
Paul |

Porsche had three tank filler pipes (necks) on early 924s:
--Type A: Filler neck standard up to 1979 model without tank flap on inside.
--Type B: Filler neck, standard for 1980-1981 models no longer available in late 1982.
--Type C: Filler neck standard beginning with 1981 model and part for all models with outside tank flap.
Technical Bulletin 82-02 was issued stating the newer type Type C with the tank flap on outside should be used for 1979 Porsche 924 and older since the production of Type B was discontinued late in 1982. The installation is described in the 924 Repair Manual Vol IV, pg. 53-10. The tank vent line was changed as well. For more see Porsche Cars NA Technical Bulletin (1987) 80-02, 3 Sept 1982. |
